Neil Young begins his first season on the Bulldog coaching staff after spending the 2023 Track and Field season as the interim head coach of the Oglethorpe University program. Young was previously at Georgia Southern University for 2021-22 campaign, where he served as assistant track & field coach for throws, jumps and multi-events.
From 2015-18, as the assistance coach for sprints and jumps at Oglethorpe, he coached an NCAA women’s triple jump qualifier in two straight seasons (finished 10th in the nation), an all-region Indoor/Outdoor honoree for three consecutive seasons and the repeat women’s 100-meter Southern Athletic Association Champion. Young helped coach several athletes to indoor and outdoor school records, conference honors, national championship appearances and Southern Athletic Association titles.
Young has designed and implemented plans for seven professional athletes as a freelance high-performance coach since 2010. He trained the third-place finalist in the women’s long jump at the Jamaican National Outdoor Championships and the Team Haiti women’s 400-meter hurdle qualifier on the road to the Rio Olympics in 2016.
He has served as Competition Director for the 2012 USA Track & Field Southeast Region Open/Masters Championship as well as meet referee duties for different NCAA conference championships. He has taught over thirteen Level 1 Coaching Schools for USA Track and Field and has spoken at numerous coaching clinics and camps around the country. Â Â
Young is a highly credentialed coach on the international level attaining Level 5 in jump events and another in sprints/hurdles through World Athletics (formerly IAAF) as well as attaining Level 3 from his national governing body, USA Track & Field. In 2012, Young attended the USA Track and Field Emerging Elite Coaches Camp in Chula Vista, California. In 2013, he was one of three coaches in the United States to participate in USOC/USATF Master Coach Mentorship Program for Sprints/Hurdles/Relays.
Recently, he has worked with Uganda’s national record holder in Women’s 200/400 meters in preparations for the next Olympiad.
Young graduated from Clemson University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing, and native of Georgetown, S.C.
