Bulldogs Avoid Traffic en Route to Victory in Inaugural Ingles I-26 Rivalry

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Athletics Department has earned the Ingles I-26 Rivalry Champions title, defeating Big South Conference foe USC Upstate in the rivalry's inaugural season. 

"It is such an honor to bring the Ingles I-26 Rivalry trophy to Asheville following our first year of competition," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "I am so thankful to our partners at Ingles and our friends at USC Upstate for making this competition possible. I also want to thank the Asheville community, which supported our teams in our rivalry matchups and donated canned goods during basketball season to help us earn an additional three points. We are already looking forward to another year of competition with USC Upstate."

Asheville won the competition 31-29, with the women's outdoor track and field team's Big South Conference Championship finish helping push the Bulldogs over the finish line. 

HOW THE POINT SYSTEM WORKED

Three points were awarded for regular-season victories in men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer, men's soccer, volleyball, and baseball. Three points were awarded to the school with the highest finish in the Big South Championship in men's cross country, women's cross country, men's indoor track and field, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field, women's outdoor track and field, and women's golf. 

In basketball, the school with the most three-point shots made by their men's and women's basketball teams scored one point for each team. 

On the baseball diamond, a bonus point was awarded to the respective pitching staff with the most strikeouts during the season. 

The two departments' respective communities had the opportunity to earn an additional three bonus points for their schools by donating to Ingles canned food drive during basketball season.
