Asheville Tennis Association Announces Endowed Scholarship to Benefit Bulldogs Men's and Women's Tennis Programs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Asheville Tennis Association, in partnership with the UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis programs, has announced today (Tuesday, Sept. 19) the creation and awarding of the ATA Endowed Scholarship to benefit members of the UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis programs.Â
The scholarship will be given annually to an Asheville men's or women's tennis player from the Southeast region, with preference given to student-athletes from North Carolina.
"The ATA Endowed Scholarship is a derivative of the Champions Junior Tennis Camp that is a collaboration between the ATA, UNC Asheville Women's and Men's Tennis programs and sponsors," said local tennis legend Buster Brown, who coined the idea for the scholarship. "With the support of the volunteers, sponsors, of which HomeTrust Bank has been the title sponsor each year and Arby's has provided lunch for the campers, and many others, all the sponsorship dollars have funded the scholarship. This collaboration pairs one of North Carolina's strongest and most active community tennis associations with two of the best Division I programs in the region. It's a win-win for both sides as the ATA continues to grow the game of tennis and the Asheville tennis programs get to enhance their scholarships."
A total of $25,000 has been raised through the collaboration of the UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis programs along with the Asheville Tennis Association in the sponsorship of the annual Junior Champions Tennis Camp. The money was raised through camp sponsors including the 2023 title sponsor HomeTrust Bank, as well as campers individually being sponsored. $10,000 in scholarship money will be awarded annually to an Asheville men's or women's tennis player who meets the criteria, while the remaining money will go to the tennis programs.
"As an UNC Asheville alumna, I am very proud of the Asheville Tennis Association Endowed Scholarship, supporting the Asheville tennis programs," said UNC Asheville Trustee Karen Brown '81. "Our summer youth tennis program is a great community collaboration to introduce the game of tennis to kids of all ages and economic backgrounds. We may have future Bulldogs on the court as a result of both the camp and this annual scholarship."
"The UNC Asheville tennis programs have a great relationship with the Asheville tennis community and the ATA," added Asheville head women's tennis coach Lise Gregory. "I'm incredibly thankful for Jeff Joyce, Buster Brown, Mary Ann Myers, Deb Southern, Annie Lundahl and many others who have been so supportive over the years. This scholarship will help us continue to achieve our goals of winning conference titles and more."Â
"The Asheville Tennis Association is proud of the efforts that have resulted in the ATA Endowed Scholarship for a worthy tennis player at UNC Asheville," said Jeff Joyce, past President of the Asheville Tennis Association. "Not only has the ATA been able to help UNC Asheville tennis, but by organizing the Champions Junior Tennis Camp, we have exposed hundreds of under-resourced youth to the great sport of tennis. With the great Buster Brown as the Camp Director, UNC Asheville Coaches Lise Gregory, Matt Frost and Tom Hand as instructors, our passionate donors, including our presenting camp sponsor HomeTrust Bank, and all the ATA volunteers, this has truly been a community team effort. Go Bulldogs!"
The check for the scholarship will be presented in a ceremony at the annual Emily McNall Classic, held this weekend (Sept. 23-24) at the Asheville Racquet Club Downtown. The ceremony will take place on Saturday (Sept. 23).
