Bulldog Athletic Association Scholarship Golf Classic Reaches New Heights

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Athletics supporters gathered at the Country Club of Asheville on Monday and Tuesday (Aug. 21-22) to compete in the Bulldog Athletics Association (BAA) Scholarship Golf Classic. The tournament is an annual event with all proceeds going towards the student-athlete scholarship fund. The tournament's presenting sponsors are Harrah's Cherokee Casino and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Additional supporting sponsors include First Bank, Highland Brewing, Budweiser of Asheville, Pepsi, Canteen, BMW, Club Pilates, Arby's and the Country Club of Asheville.

"A big Bulldog thank you to the sponsors, golfers, and volunteers," said Athletic Director Janet R. Cone. "This tournament's success is another great milestone for Bulldog athletics as we continue to Dream Bigger and Achieve More!"

This year's golf tournament established new records in fundraising, participants and tee sign sponsors. There were 85 tee signs purchased and 228 golfers participated in the tournament over the two days, equating to over $120,000 raised in net proceeds, surpassing the previous record of 76 tee signs, 200 golfers, and just over $103,000 raised in net proceeds at the 2022 tournament.

"Thank you to everyone who came out to support our annual Bulldog Athletics Association Scholarship Golf Classic," said Associate Athletic Director for External Operations Aaron Bessey. "We couldn't ask for a better way to kick-off the new year with such a strong showing of support for our Bulldog student-athletes."

The golf tournament's success is thanks in large part to the work of the committee composed of Bruce Goforth, Darlene Davis, Betsy Blose, Rick Lutovsky, John Pierce, Kevin Pasarilla, Anna Catherine Pritchard and Donna Peek.

"Over the past 11 years it has been amazing to see the growth of the tournament and the Bulldog athletics program," said Golf Committee Chair Bruce Goforth. "In total, we have now raised well over $1M in scholarship funds through this annual golf tournament, which goes a long way in the recruiting and retention of the best student-athletes for UNC Asheville."
