Sam Pitts-Eckersall Named Preseason All-Conference, Asheville Picked Sixth in Big South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville sophomore midfielder Sam Pitts-Eckersall was named Preseason All-Conference, while the Bulldogs were picked sixth in the Big South Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced by the league today (Tuesday, Aug. 15).
In his first season in Asheville, Pitts-Eckersall played and started in 16 matches during his freshman campaign. He registered six goals for 12 points on the season to lead the team in both categories. Pitts-Eckersall netted a hat trick against Georgia Southern, while also tallying goals against Gardner-Webb, Campbell and Longwood on the season. He played all 90 minutes against USC Upstate, and was named to both the All-Big South Second Team and the All-Big South Freshman Team.Â
Defending Big South Conference champion High Point topped the poll with 62 points and seven first-place votes, while Gardner-Webb was picked second with 51 points. USC Upstate was picked third with 50 points, while Presbyterian was selected fourth with 35 points. Longwood was picked fifth with 26 points and one first-place vote, while Asheville (23 points), Winthrop (22 points) and Radford (19 points) rounded out the poll.
Asheville opens up the 2023 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 24 at home against Navy. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
