ASHEVILLE, N.C. – This past Thursday (May 11), the UNC Asheville athletic department took part in Debbie Antonelli's 24 Hours of Nothing But Net (24NBN) event to help raise money for the North Carolina Special Olympics.
The 24NBN fundraiser was created by Antonelli in South Carolina in 2019. She was inspired by her middle son, Frankie, who is a Special Olympian. Antonelli created the event by making 100 free throws every hour for 24 hours. In year one, Antonelli raised $85,000, and entering this year, the event has raised more than $415,000. This year, the event expanded across eight states with this being the second year UNC Asheville has represented North Carolina. The funds that each state raises go directly to that state's Special Olympics organization.
This year, the Bulldogs partnered with Bear's Smokehouse BBQ where members of the UNC Asheville men's and women's basketball teams and members of the community took part in shooting free throws to help raise money for North Carolina Special Olympics. The event took place at Bear's Smokehouse during lunch and dinner, and 10% of all proceeds were donated to the event.
Overall, over $5,000 was raised for Special Olympics North Carolina, and $588 of the money raised came from 10% of proceeds from Bear's Smokehouse. Antonelli's 24 hours of shooting took place May 13-14 and by the end of the event, $136,412 had been raised across all eight states.
"I think this event is as much about raising awareness, as the support of a special cause like this is," head men's basketball coach Mike Morrell said. "With everything Debbie has done to help our program and our department, it's really special to be a part of this event."
Donations for this event are being accepted throughout the month of May. You can donate specifically to the North Carolina Special Olympics by clicking here.
