RALEIGH, N.C. - UNC Asheville Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Colin Smith has been selected for the fourth cohort of the University of North Carolina System's Executive Leadership Institute, recently announced by the organization.
Smith is one of 30 individuals throughout the state system to be selected for the cohort. The 10-month program was established in 2019 to build the next generation of leaders from within the UNC System. Curriculum provides an overview of UNC System operations and leadership development opportunities, and sessions are designed to foster collaboration and partnerships among participants and their institutions.
"Congratulations to Colin on this wonderful opportunity within the University of North Carolina System," said Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone. "I know he will represent Asheville well and come away as a better leader to better serve our department, our student-athletes and our campus community."
Smith is in his second year at UNC Asheville as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. In his role he oversees gameday operations and also any DEI initiatives as they pertain to athletics, while also serving as the sport administrator for both men's and women's soccer and men's and women's track and field.
"This is a great opportunity to learn from other professionals in our field and bring back ideas that can not only help myself personally but our athletic department as a whole," said Smith. "Being one of 30 individuals selected for the UNC System Executive Leadership Institute is truly an honor, and I plan to be an ambassador for our institution. Thank you again to Chancellor Dr. Kimberly van Noort and Janet Cone for their continued support."
The program is designed to build success at the executive level. Five interactive and experiential immersion modules will be delivered via virtual and face-to-face instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The team and individual executive coaching component is provided in partnership with the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate and the benefits of the ELI alumni network. Graduates will have the opportunity to pay it forward as mentors for future cohorts, ensuring promising talent continues to develop across the UNC System.
