ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Athletics held its annual "Our Turn to Play" scholarship dinner Tuesday night (Apr. 25) in the Highsmith Student Union.
Kelly Davis, Chair of the Our Turn to Play Committee opened the night followed by remarks from Interim Chancellor Dr. Kimberly van Noort and event Emcee Debbie Antonelli.
Several UNC Asheville student-athletes including Ona Elkins (Volleyball), Raina Jackson (Track and Field) and Delaney Carlton (Swim and Dive) shared what the opportunity to participate in college athletics has meant to each of them. The UNC Asheville women's tennis team was recognized for their great season which included both a Big South Conference regular season championship and a Big South Conference Championship runner-up finish.
Stacey Enos was presented with the Trailblazer Award, before the finalists of the Rising Star Award were announced. The finalists for the award were Ami Grace Dougah (Tennis), Faith Adams (Basketball), Amanda Orban (Cross Country), Raina Jackson (Track and Field), Phoebe Carles (Golf), Ona Elkins (Volleyball), Lindie Clark (Soccer) and Nora Segurola Larrinaga (Swim and Dive), with Segurola Larrinaga winning the award.
Following the awards presentation keynote speaker JoAnn Scott, who is the managing director of the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four came up and shared remarks followed by a Q&A session between Antonelli and Scott.
"Anything that empowers young women through sport, I want to be a part of and that's exactly what this event does," said Antonelli. "There are a lot of really great athletes that deserve to play and compete at the highest level and UNC Asheville wants to provide the funding so that they can do that."
"Any time you can honor young women combining athletics and academics, you show role models," said Scott. "What you see is what you can be."
UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone closed the evening with her remarks.
"I would like to say how proud I am to lead our Bulldogs," said Cone. "Sports have played a large role in my life and Title IX has changed the lives of so many women. But the work is far from over. We continue to ask for help to provide more scholarships and increased opportunities to those that might not have the chance to attend UNC Asheville and take advantage of all that we can offer."
