ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Athletic Department announced on Wednesday morning the 2023 "Our Turn to Play" Scholarship Dinner will be held on Tuesday, April 25. The Dinner, which is a partnership with First Bank, will feature Keynote Speaker JoAn Scott, the managing director of the NCAA Final Four and the NCAA Division I men's basketball championship. ESPN and CBS Sports' Debbie Antonelli will again serve as the night's Emcee. Furthermore, Stacey Enos will be awarded the Trailblazer Award.
Our Turn to Play is an annual event with a mission to highlight the accomplishments of women in collegiate sports and raise funds for UNC Asheville female student-athletes.
Scott joined the NCAA in 2013 after a 17-year tenure with Nike. While with the NCAA, Scott has played an integral role of the growth in the Final Four overseeing the tournament's operations and marketing. From signage to volunteers to hotel rooms and meeting space, Scott is the NCAA executive who keeps everything in order.
"I am thrilled and honored to be a part of this event at UNC Asheville. Our Turn to Play highlights the impact of education and female student-athletes as we look to the future. Janet Cone is a dear friend of mine, I am thrilled to be a part of something so special."
Antonelli has been a familiar name for UNC Asheville Athletics recently as she has Emceed the first two Celebration on the Court event and received the Trailblazer award at last year's Our Turn to Play event. Antonelli began her career in athletics as a star student-athlete, leading the Wolfpack to four Women's NCAA Tournament appearances. She later got into coaching and athletic administration, before gaining national acclaim as a basketball analyst and sports broadcaster.
Antonelli has since spent 34 years in the television industry, sharing the stories of collegiate athletes to homes all across the country, and was recently inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Antonelli has spent time broadcasting with ESPN, the ACC network, the Big Ten Network, CBS Sports, and FOX. On top of all of this, she has worked behind the scenes to improve the Women's NCAA Tournament, fighting for equitable treatment and resources for female athletes compared to their male counterparts.
"I'm thrilled to be a part of a purposeful, uplifting, energy-filled night to empower the women athletes in the UNC Asheville Athletics Department," Antonelli said. "I'm involved because Janet Cone said she needed more teammates helping these young women have the resources needed to study and compete in sports! JoAn is a mentor and role model who will inspire and motivate others to see how and why these events are important for young women."
This year's Trailblazer Award winner is Stacey Enos. With no youth soccer or school teams to play for, Enos started her athletic life on the softball field with girls and on the playgrounds with boys playing pickup soccer games. By age 14, Stacey found her way to Frisch's, a soccer club team of mostly college-aged women. Her journey in soccer took her to the University of North Carolina where she played for the Tar Heels. Following her playing career, Enos made coaching stops at Utah State and was the Head Coach for Warren Wilson for 16 years. Since departing from coaching, Enos has become part owner of the Asheville City Soccer Club.
