Four Asheville Men’s Soccer Players Earn College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® Honors

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Four UNC Asheville Men's Soccer players have earned Academic All-District® honors from College Sports Communicators, announced by the organization today (Tuesday, Nov. 21).

Senior midfielder Brendan Herb, junior midfielder Heath Flathau, senior defender Griffin Stidham and junior defender Myles Edmondson all earned the honor for UNC Asheville. Student-athletes must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Academic All-District honors:
  • Must be a sophomore both academically and athletically
  • Must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50
  • Must have either appeared in 90 percent of this season's contests and/or started in 66 percent of this season's contests

Herb played and started in all 18 matches this season. He shared the team lead and was tied for ninth in goals with four, while leading both the team and conference with seven assists for 15 total points. He scored goals against Navy (Aug. 24), Presbyterian (Sept. 23), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 6) and USC Upstate (Nov. 1) and tallied assists against Navy (Aug. 24), Queens (N.C.) (Sept. 1), Evansville (Sept. 4), Wofford (Sept. 12), ETSU (Sept. 19) and Radford (two, Oct. 14). Herb was named Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 5, 2023). For his efforts this season, he was named to the Big South Conference All-Conference First Team and also to the All-Academic Team.

This is Herb's first career Academic All-District® honor. The Corvallis Ore. native holds a 4.0 GPA in management.

Flathau appeared in all 18 matches on the season, making 11 starts as a junior. He tallied an assist on the season in the match against VMI (Sept. 16). Flathau played all 90 minutes twice this season, at Wofford (Sept. 12) and at Gardner-Webb (Oct. 6). 

This is Flathau's first career Academic All-District® honor. The Hattiesburg, Miss. native holds a 3.97 GPA in health and wellness promotion.

Stidham appeared in 17 matches as a senior, making 16 starts. He tallied his lone assist of the season in the win over USC Upstate (Nov. 1). Stidham played the entire match on 12 occasions this season, including a career-high 110 minutes in the Big South Conference Championship semifinal against Winthrop (Nov. 5). He was also named to the Big South Conference All-Conference Second Team.

This is Stidham's first career Academic All-District® honor. The Apex, N.C. native holds a 3.80 GPA in history.

Edmondson played and started in all 18 matches this season as a junior. He tallied three assists on the season, recording helpers against VMI (Sept. 16), Gardner-Webb (Oct. 6) and Furman (Oct. 24). He was named Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9, and later named a Big South Conference First Team All-Conference selection.

This is Edmondson's first career Academic All-District selection. The Oldham, Manchester, United Kingdom native holds a 3.63 GPA in health and wellness promotion.
