Strong Final Day Propels Women's Swimming to Fourth-Place Finish at the Fall Frenzy Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A strong final day on Sunday (Nov. 19) propelled UNC Asheville Women's Swimming to a fourth-place finish at the Fall Frenzy Invitational hosted by Queens University of Charlotte.

Through the morning preliminaries, Asheville logged 23 season-best times and one lifetime-best time while landing four in the A finals, six in the B finals and five in the C finals.

Grace Adams secured her spot in the A final of the 200-yard backstroke with an eighth-place season-best finish in 2:02.21, while Alessia Cunegatti qualified for the B finals in the event finishing in 2:05.07. Amelia Presley logged a lifetime-best time of 2:08.18, while Addison Wright (2:10.34) and Tess Peny (2:11.96) each registered season-bests in the event. Abby Parks posted a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle to qualify for the A final in a season-best 50.39 seconds, while Anna Marcotti (52.25 seconds) and Ava Kilpatrick (52.45 seconds) each registered season-best times in the event to qualify for the C final. Danai Gkogkosi (53.00 seconds), Taylor Smith (53.22 seconds), Olivia Ciancimino (54.36 seconds) and Rachel Daly (54.66 seconds) each recorded season-best times in the event. Beatrice Cocconcelli qualified for the A final in the 200-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 2:21.45 to finish eighth, while Miriam Wheatley (2:22.67), Gracelyn Cox (2:22.78) and Anna Kate Halligan (2:23.08) all logged season-bests to qualify for the B final. Julie Lahiff qualified for the C final in a season-best 2:25.12, while Jane Brierley (2:26.15), Rose Sciaudone (2:29.03), Gaby Shenot (2:29.36) and Alexis Walker (2:39.05) all logged season-best times in the event. Caroline Crouse logged a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in a season-best 2:01.88 to qualify for the A final, while Riley Edmundson (2:05.97) and Chloe McDonald (2:07.39, season-best) each qualified for the B final. Lahiff (2:09.94) and Peny (2:10.68) each recorded season-best times and qualified for the C final in the event.

Caitlin Hefner finished 10th in the mile (1650-yard) freestyle with a season-best 17:17.14, while Sciaudone posted a season-best 17:57.45 in the event. Grace Adams finished fifth in the 200-yard backstroke with a lifetime-best 2:01.80, while Cunegatti posted a lifetime-best 2:03.29 in the event to finish 14th. Parks finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 50.40 seconds, while Marcotti (52.16 seconds) and Kilpatrick (52.52 seconds) each logged season-best times in the event. Cocconcelli posted a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best 2:20.48, while Halligan finished 12th with a lifetime-best 2:21.67. Cox finished 13th in a season-best 2:22.18, while Wheatley finished 15th with a mark of 2:22.72. Lahiff also competed in the event, finishing in 2:26.62. Asheville's highlight of the finals was Crouse's victory in the 200-yard butterfly, as she won the event with a school record and NCAA B Cut time of 1:59.07. Edmundson finished ninth in the event in 2:03.76, while McDonald also finished 13th with a season-best time of 2:06.40. Peny logged a season-best 2:08.47 in the event, while Lahiff also registered a season-best 2:08.61. Asheville notched a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, with the quartet of Crouse, Parks, Kilpatrick and Marcotti finishing in 3:25.19 anchored by a lifetime-best 50.18 split from Crouse. The team of Gkogkosi, Ciancimino, Cunegatti and Presley also finished the event in 3:32.65.

In total, Asheville logged nine season-bests and five lifetime-bests en route to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.
 
"We had a really exciting mid-season meet where team members were able to execute race plans and strategies," said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "Earning so many lifetime bests, season best and a few school records too really proves the work is paying off. To top off the meet with an NCAA B-Cut was icing on the cake!"
 
"It has been so fulfilling to compete in my last midseason with such a supportive team, these ladies are so inspiring and have brought an endless smile to my face this weekend!" said senior team captain Gaby Shenot. "I am so thankful my last midseason gave me so many new memories with the best team!"
 
The Bulldogs return to the water on Dec. 16 to host Georgia Southern. The action begins at 11:00 a.m. from the Justice Center Pool.
