Women's Swimming Finishes Day One at the Fall Frenzy Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming finished day one at the Fall Frenzy Invitational on Friday (Nov. 17).
Asheville was paced in the 500-yard freestyle by Caitlin Hefner, who qualified for the C finals with a season-best time of 5:02.50. while Grace Adams also posted a season-best time of 5:06.22 in the event. Anna Marcotti posted a season-best time of 5:06.70, while Rose Sciaudone put together a season-best time of 5:08.58. Julie Lahiff recorded a season-best 5:09.23 in the event, while Gaby Shenot also swam a season-best 5:16.33. Caroline Crouse and Alessia Cunegatti finished back-to-back in the prelims of the 200-yard IM, with Crouse swimming a lifetime-best 2:03.88 and Cunegatti posting a lifetime-best 204.93. Beatrice Cocconcelli swam a season-best 2:06.81 to qualify for the B final, while Anna Kate Halligan posted a lifetime-best time of 2:07.99. Miriam Wheatley posted a season-best 2:08.77, while Riley Edmundson swam a 2:09.04. Gracelyn Cox swam a season-best 2:09.62, while Tess Peny also recorded a season best 2:11.43 and Addison Wright also secured a season-best time in 2:17.23. Asheville was paced in the 50-yard freestyle by last week's Atlantic Sun Conference Swimmer of the Week Abby Parks, qualifying for the A final finishing third in a season-best time of 23.10 seconds. Olivia Ciancimino qualified for the C final in 21st place with a season-best time of 24.19 seconds, while Danai Gkogkosi posted a season-best time of 24.28 seconds. Taylor Smith and Ava Kilpatrick finished back-to-back with season-best times of 24.37 seconds and 24.42 seconds respectively, while Amelia Presley posted a season-best time of 25.01 seconds. Jane Brierley (25.08 seconds), Rachel Daly (25.79 seconds) and Alexis Walker (26.66 seconds) each also recorded season-bests in the event. Marcotti posted a lifetime-best in the 100-yard butterfly time trial in 56.48 seconds, while Cocconcelli posted a lifetime-best in the 100-yard backstroke in 58.26 seconds.
Through the preliminary heats Asheville posted 20 season-best times and five lifetime-best times, while landing three in the A finals, one in the B finals and two in the C finals.
Asheville placed sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with the team of Crouse, Ciancimino, Gkogkosi and Parks finishing in 1:34.34. The quartet of Marcotti, Smith, Kilpatrick and Presley also finished the race in 1:36.97. Hefner paced the Bulldogs with a season-best time of 5:01:31 in the 500-yard freestyle. Crouse set a school record in the 200-yard IM in 2:02.05, finishing fifth in the event. Parks posted a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.15 seconds, while Ciancimino swam the event in 24.38 seconds. Asheville posted eighth and ninth-place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay, with the quartet of Adams, Cocconcelli, Smith and Parks finishing the event in 3:48.95 while Cunegatti, Cox, Crouse and Ciancimino finishing in 3:49.55.
"Getting the school record was very exciting and unexpected; it made me feel more confident in myself and what I'm capable of," said Crouse. "I love being at this meet with my team - they are my favorite group of people on this planet, they work so hard, and they make me better. I can't wait to watch them continue to swim fast."
The Bulldog swimmers return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 18) for the second day of competition. The action begins from the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center at 9:30 a.m., with video available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
