BUIES CREEK, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving opened its 2023-24 campaign with a 157-105 victory over Campbell on Friday (Oct. 6). The victory extends Asheville's dual meet winning streak to 22, dating back to Oct. 2020.

"Today was a good start to the season," said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "It was nice to see all of our new team members race and our returners get to race again. I was most impressed with our 200 freestylers and 200 butterfliers as they exceeded our expectations. We hope these will continue to be strong events throughout this year for the squad."

Alessia Cugenatti, Beatrice Cocconcelli, Taylor Smith and Abby Parks finished second in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:52.62, while Grace Adams, Jane Brierley, Caroline Crouse and Anna Marcotti took third in 4:00.03. Danai Gkogkosi, Gracelyn Cox, Chloe McDonald and Olivia Ciancimino finished fourth in the event in 4:00.29, while Addison Wright, Anna Kate Halligan, Tess Peny and Rachel Daly finished seventh in 4:11.38. Caitlin Hefner won the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:34.01, while Rose Sciaudone finished third in 11:00.15. Julie Lahiff (11:12.05) and Gaby Shenot (11:22.59) finished sixth and seventh in the event respectively. Asheville took the top four spots in the 200-yard freestlye, with Marcotti picking up the win in 1:54.63, while Gkogkosi finished second in 1:55.33. Ava Kilpatrick finished third in 1:55.81, while Cunegatti took fourth in 1:56.19. Adams placed third in the 100-yard backstroke in 59.10, while Asheville also had several other placers in the race. Daly (1:02.31) also finished fifth, Amelia Presley (1:02.52) in sixth and Wright (1:03.05) in seventh.

Asheville took the top two spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, with Smith picking up the win in 1:06.28 and Cocconcelli finishing second in 1:06.96. Miriam Wheatley finished fourth in 1:07.21, while Cox also finished eighth in 1:10.00. Asheville took the top three spots in the 200-yard butterfly, led by Riley Edmundson getting the win in 2:06.32. Crouse (2:06.49) and McDonald (2:11.26) finished second and third respectively, while Peny (2:16.32) also finished sixth. The Bulldogs would notch two of the top three finishes in the 50-yard freestyle, with Parks taking second in 24.25 seconds and Kilpatrick taking third in 24.85 seconds. Ciancimino placed fifth in 25.31 seconds, while Daly also took eighth in 26.24 seconds. Asheville also had two of the top three finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, with Parks (52.43 seconds) and Gkogkosi (53.24 seconds) finishing second and third respectively. Kilpatrick (54.22 seconds) and Ciancimino (55.42 seconds) also finished fifth and sixth respectively in the event.

Cunegatti would pick up a win in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.16), while Adams finished fourth (2:09.45) and Presley (2:14.42) and Lahiff (2:19.62) finished sixth and seventh respectively. The Bulldogs picked up three of the top four finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke with Cocconcelli (2:22.87) finishing second, Wheatley (2:23.62) third and Halligan fourth (2:28.43). Cox also finished seventh in 2:30.88. Asheville would go on to take four of the top five spots in the 500-yard freestyle with Marcotti taking the win in 5:10.43 and Hefner finishing second in 5:11.01. Sciaudone (5:20.43) took fourth in the event, while Shenot also finished fifth in the event in 5:27.34. Asheville would capture four of the top five spots in the 100-yard butterfly, with McDonald (57.60 seconds) getting the win and Edmundson (57.86 seconds) taking second. Smith (58.52 seconds) finished third in the event, while Crouse (59.49 seconds) took fourth.

Asheville would take four of the top five spots in the 200-yard IM, with Cunegatti winning the event in 2:07.43 and Edmundson finishing second in 2:08.66. Crouse took third in 2:09.58, while Cocconcelli took fourth in 2:09.63. Halligan also finished sixth in 2:14.19. Asheville would round out the event taking second, fourth and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Gkogkosi, Marcotti, Kilpatrick and Parks finished second in 1:38.39, while Smith, Ciancimino, Adams and Presley finished fourth in 1:41.02. Wheatley, Daly, Sciaudone and Halligan finished sixth in 1:43.95.

"Our first dual meet this season went amazing," said junior captain Edmundson. "We are a new team this year and being able to experience these moments with empowering women is something I will never take for granted. We are in store for some pretty awesome things this season. We are pumped for ECU tomorrow, GO Bulldogs!"
