Asheville’s Málek & Richardson Sweep Big South Freshman Runners of the Week

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Following their performance at the Live in Lou Classic last Saturday, Jan Málek of the UNC Asheville men's cross country team and Isabel Richardson of the women's cross country team swept this week's Big South Conference Freshman of the Week weekly honors. The league made the announcement on Wednesday (Oct. 4).
Richardson finished fifth out of 383 runners in the women's 5K blue race. She finished at 18:00.1 and was the second-fastest freshman among the 383 runners in the field.
In his collegiate debut, Málek set a program freshman 8K record with a time of 24:41.7. He finished 65th out of 378 runners and was Asheville's second-fastest runner in the meet to help the Bulldogs earn a 14th-place finish. Following their performance in Louisville, Asheville entered the top 15 in the latest NCAA DI Cross Country Regional. The Bulldogs are ranked No. 15 in the Southeast Region.
UNC Asheville will return to the course on Saturday, Oct. 14, as they compete in the USC Upstate Invitational in Spartanburg, S.C.
