10.28.2023 | Men's Soccer
ROCK HILL, S.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer picked up a Big South Conference win and three crucial points at Winthrop on Saturday (Oct. 28), beating the Eagles by a 3-1 score. The win also solidified Asheville's first winning regular season since 2001, and the first time Asheville has posted eight wins in a season since 2003.
The Bulldogs got the scoring started quickly, with Aysa Hamid scoring his fourth of the season unassisted 4:39 into the match. The Bulldogs would go on to out-shoot Winthrop 12-9 in the half, ultimately taking the 1-0 lead to the break.
Asheville would play the second half up a man due to a Winthrop red card late in the first half and would make the Eagles pay offensively. However, Winthrop would battle to tie the match at 1-1 in the 76th minute with a goal from Diego Candia from an assist Aiden Williams. Less than two minutes later, Conor Behan's fourth of the season off an assist from Stewart Patnaud put the Bulldogs ahead for good in the match. Patnaud would notch a goal of his own unassisted in the 83rd minute to bring the match to its final score and secure the win for Asheville.
Asheville totaled 21 shots in the match, including 10 on frame along with four corner kicks. Hamid set a new career-high with five shots in the match with three on frame, Brendan Herb, Patnaud and Edvin Grolimund each had two. Viðar Ragnarsson, Behan and Michael Wilkerson each also had one shot in the match. Charlie Farrar (8-4-2) made a career-high 10 saves in the match.
The Bulldogs (8-5-2, 3-2-1 Big South) return to the pitch on Wednesday (Nov. 1) to close out the regular season at home against USC Upstate in the latest installment of the Ingles I-26 Rivalry. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
