BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The Big South announced on Thursday that UNC Asheville has been declared the winner of the Big South Conference's annual Institutional Sportsmanship Award for the 2021-22 athletic season. In addition to the Institutional Sportsmanship Award, the men's cross country, women's soccer and baseball programs were named the Team Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2021-22 academic year as well.Â
"We are very proud to receive the Institutional Sportsmanship Award from the Big South," said UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet R. Cone. "Our athletic department emphasizes developing 'Champions in Athletics and Leaders in Life' and sportsmanship is something we value here at UNC Asheville and this award signifies it. Thank you to all our student-athletes, coaches, and staff for playing a role in our University earning this honor. I'd like to send a special note of congratulations to our men's cross country, women's soccer, and baseball programs on their individual teams' sportsmanship honors as well."
The overall winner is determined on a system that recognizes the highest percentage of the maximum points an institution can receive for each team award. The team awards were voted on by Big South student-athletes following each conference championship, and eight different institutions were honored for the 2021-22 campaign. No Institutional Sportsmanship award was conducted in 2019-20 and 2020-21 due to incomplete/abbreviated seasons caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
UNC Asheville, which was honored with three Team Sportsmanship Awards in 2021-22, was tops among the Big South membership with a 33.33 percentage of the maximum points received in its sponsored league sports. Longwood finished second in the Institutional Sportsmanship standings with a 26.34 percentage, followed by Charleston Southern at 24.12 percent.
