BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – UNC Asheville Track & Field had two athletes compete at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East prelims this week, as Solomon McDonald threw the shot put and Claudia Prieto competed in the long jump.
McDonald, who came into the Championship seeded 48th of 48 participants, finished 33rd with an official toss of 17.45 meters (57-3). The Carthage, North Carolina, native is Asheville's record holder in the shot put (indoor & outdoor) and ranks in the top five in program history in the discus and weight throw. Prieto, meanwhile, excelled in her own right, finishing 23rd individually after she was originally seeded 48th of 48. Prieto's best jump came first, registering a mark of 5.92m/19-5.25. A native of Madrid, Spain, Prieto is the record holder in UNC Asheville history in the long jump (indoor & outdoor) and triple jump (indoor & outdoor). "I'm so proud of Solomon and Claudia," said UNC Asheville Head Track and Field Coach Joel Williams. "So much credit also goes to their event coaches JP Kimbrough (jumps) and Kim Cannon (throws). Both Solomon and Claudia far exceeded their pre-competition seedings, and we are so happy to have them representing UNC Asheville on such a big stage."
McDonald and Prieto were the first Bulldogs to qualify for the NCAA Championships since 2017 (Matthew Harding, 800m) and were the first teammates to make the Championships in the same season.
