Solomon McDonald and Claudia Prieto selected to compete in the NCAA Prelims

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – UNC Asheville track & field student-athletes Solomon McDonald (shot put) and Claudia Prieto (long jump) have been selected to compete in the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championship East prelims. The Championship prelims will take place May 25-28 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
"It's gratifying to see the efforts/performances of both Claudia and Solomon pay off with the opportunity to compete at the 2022 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field East Prelims," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "Both are accomplishing that qualification with another year of eligibility remaining. Much credit must also go to their event coaches, JP Kimbrough (jumps) and Kim Cannon (throws), for their efforts in guiding these student-athletes through this journey."
McDonald and Prieto join a small group of Bulldogs that have qualified for an NCAA meet, joining former Bulldog greats Natalie Pearson (Outdoor – 200m – 2010, 2011), Milan Ristic (Indoor – 60m hurdles – 2013), and Matthew Harding (Outdoor – 800m – 2017). It marks the first time multiple Bulldogs have advanced to the NCAA Championships in the same season.
Both student-athletes have their names etched in multiple events across UNC Asheville's record books. McDonald is Asheville's record holder in the shot put (indoor & outdoor), along with ranking in the top five in program history in the discus and weight throw. McDonald has also garnered multiple Big South Field Athlete of the Week honors during her tenure as a Bulldog.
Like McDonald, Prieto has no shortage of records to her record. She is the record holder in UNC Asheville history in the long jump (indoor & outdoor) and triple jump (indoor & outdoor). She ranks second all-time in the 55-meter, 60-meter, and 100-meter dashes and is a multiple-time winner of the Big South Field Athlete of the Week award. Furthermore, Prieto is a two-time Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year honoree for her work in the classroom.
McDonald will compete in the first round of the shot put at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 25, while Prieto will do the same in the long jump at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 26. Live results will be available HERE, and the Championships will be streamed HERE.
