05.12.2021 | Track and Field
HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville track & field teams closed out the 2021 Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships with several stellar performances on Wednesday. Asheville's men's team finished in fourth place with 95 points, while the women's team finished the three-day meet in fifth with 73 points.
These finishes by the men's and women's teams marked the best by the Bulldogs in quite some time at the Big South Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The fourth-place finish by the men's team is its best since 2000, while the women's team placing fifth marked its best placing at the league's showcase outdoor meet since 2013.
"The meet was a success in that we were very competitive in many events and the student-athletes were working hard for every possible point," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "We came away with several several school records, top five school performances, and a number of podium finishes as well. It was also great to see our team providing great support for each other."
Overall, the Bulldogs picked up six podium finishes on Wednesday. One of these came at the very end of the day as the 4x400-meter relay team consisting of Anthony Mason, Akin Williams, Isaac Teasley, and Bryson Riddick topped the field with a time of 3:14.63. Not only did this time set a new outdoor school record, but it also claimed Asheville's first outdoor conference championship in this event.
Three more Bulldogs finished as the runner-up in an event. Zac Weas (110-meter hurdles – 15.14) and Mason (400-meter run – 47.81) accounted for two of those second-place finishes. Mason's time of 47.81 in the 400-meter improved upon his time of 47.94 in the prelims that broke the program's outdoor record on Tuesday.
Asheville's other second-place finish came in the 4x100-meter relay. The foursome of Williams, Anderson, Mason, and Riddick clocked in at 41.41, finishing just 0.25 seconds behind USC Upstate's time of 41.16. Wednesday's outing was the latest of a long line of success for Asheville in the 4x100m relay. The Bulldogs placed first or second in this relay in every meet during the 2021 outdoor season.
The other two performances that garnered All-Big South recognition for the Bulldogs came in the field events. Claudia Prieto claimed her second All-Conference honor of the week by finishing third in the triple jump with a mark of 12.16-meters. Freshman Maya Stanley joined Prieto by placing third in the discus with a throw of 42.31-meters. Additionally, it set a new season-best mark for Asheville along with a new personal best for Stanley.
The action on the track and in the field events weren't the only places where the Bulldogs earned some recognition Wednesday. India Appleton from the women's team and Jack Choiniere were recognized for their work in the classroom as both were named to the Big South's All-Academic team for the outdoor track & field season.
Over the course of the final day, the Bulldogs set several new personal or season-best marks in their given events, and five outdoor school records were broken.
