Track and Field athlete set new outdoor long jump record

ASHEVILLE N.C. – Coming off a strong month in which she set a new school record in the outdoor long jump, Claudia Prieto of UNC Asheville Track and Field has been named the February Bulldog of the Month.

The competition, which included 11 total contestants due to the busy month, garnered over 1,000 total votes, with Prieto collecting 41 percent.

Prieto, a native of Madrid, Spain, helped the Bulldogs get off to a strong start in 2021 at the Winthrop Tri-Meet on February 27. The junior registered personal-bests in the long jump (5.78 meters), triple jump (11.66 meters) while helping Asheville win the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 50.23. Prieto's long jump of 5.78 meters is a school record for outdoor competition, leading her to Big South Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week honors.

Prieto's impressive month didn't end there, being named to the Big South All-Academic for the second consecutive season.
