Asheville, N.C. – Beginning the season 2-0 for the first time since 2001, the UNC Asheville Men's Soccer Team will face a tough test on Sunday, traveling to No. 20 Campbell for a match at 6:00 p.m.
Asheville's 2-0 record against Big South competition is its best start in league play since 2016. The Bulldogs have registered a pair of one-goal victories at Greenwood Field thus far in 2021, topping Longwood 2-1 in its opener before Colin Daughtry lifted Asheville to a 2-1 overtime victory this past Sunday. Taylor Durall and Daughtry both found the back of the net in Sunday's thriller, with Miles Peay and Dominic Miller setting up the scores. In net, Leon Musial has gotten his collegiate career off to a great start, turning away five shots on goal to help lift the Bulldogs to 2-0.
The preseason favorite to win the league, Campbell is 2-1-1 on the season, tying USC Upstate (2-2, Feb. 28) before most recently dropping its contest at No. 17 UNC Wilmington (0-2, March 3). Despite its last two matches, Campbell ranks fifth in the United Soccer Coaches South Region Poll and is No. 20 in the College Soccer News Top 30 poll. While six players have scored for Campbell, the Camels are led by Jalen James' three goals and one assist, with Frank Momo and Alemu Mercer-Miko each scoring a pair. In net, Samuel Lechuga has registered eight saves while conceding four goals.
