Five Bulldogs Earn Big South Weekly Honors in Outdoor Track & Field

03.17.2021 | Track and Field

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Wednesday that five members of the UNC Asheville track & field teams earned weekly recognitions for competitions held between March 8-14. Claudia Prieto was named the league's women's outdoor field athlete of the week. Additionally, the 4x100m relay team of Akin Williams, Jalen Anderson, Alex Williams, and Isaac Teasley were named the conference's men's track athletes of the week.

Prieto, who also earned this same honor two weeks ago, won both the long jump and triple jump at the Winthrop Spring Invitational last Saturday. She matched her school outdoor record with a leap of 5.78m in the long jump and recorded a distance of 11.70m in winning the triple jump.

"Claudia tied her school record long jump of two weeks ago and improved upon her personal-best in the triple jump," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "Her technical consistency from jump to jump is going to provide her even more opportunities to improve upon those marks throughout the season."

Asheville's 4x100m relay team claimed first at the Winthrop Spring Invitational with a school-record time of 41.16, breaking the previous record of 41.82 set in 2018.

"The 4x100m men's relay team performed very well and were able to make use of all of the practice relay exchanges they have had recently," Williams added. "They shattered the previous school record. They have put in the work and then executed."

The Bulldog track & field programs will be back in action on March 26-27 when they compete at the Montreat Invitational.
