BIG SOUTH RELEASE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced on Wednesday that UNC Asheville's Solomon McDonald had been named the league's Male Field Athlete of the Week. It marks not only the first weekly award of McDonald's career, but he also becomes the first Bulldog to ever earn Field Athlete of the Week honors during an indoor season.
"Solomon has worked extremely hard in training after last season and into the summer," said Head Coach Joel Williams. "A lot of his success, in addition to the efforts of Assistant Coach Kim Cannon, is due to him being a true student of his events. He understands the technical refinements necessary for him to get significant improvements in his events."
McDonald made a definite impact during his first action of the 2021-22 track & field season. The Carthage, N.C. native broke the school's indoor record in the shot put with a toss of 18.06-meters at last weekend's Appalachian State Invitational. McDonald's throw topped the previous record set in 2001 by Brian MacPhee (16.17-meters).
Thanks to his outing last weekend in Boone, McDonald now holds Asheville's indoor and outdoor records in the shot put, with his top outdoor throw being 17.29-meters.
