CHARLOTTE, N.C. / LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UNC Asheville swimming & diving teams continued to rack up stellar performances on Saturday at the Fall Frenzy Invitational and on the final day of diving at the TYR '85 Invitational hosted by Liberty.
There were several stellar outings by Asheville student-athletes, but perhaps the most impressive outing came in the evening session when Mikaela Fullerton won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.19. This time not only claimed the top spot in the event, but it also established new program and meet records as well. Furthermore, Fullerton's time earned her an NCAA Provisional Cut, becoming the second Bulldog ever to accomplish this, joining Morgan Rulevich (200-yard breaststroke – 2:15.45) in 2016.
"The best feeling in the world is swimming for a team that you know has your back no matter what," said Fullerton. "Touching the wall and then having my family right there behind the blocks, for me, there's no better feeling in the world. Go Bulldogs!"
The Bulldog swimmers once again had a strong start during the prelims Saturday morning. Of the 38 swims in the morning session, Asheville posted 31 season-best times, six lifetime-best outings along with breaking one school record and two freshman records. With all this success, the Bulldogs had a total of 25 qualify for the finals later in the day, plus the two relays.
The trio of record-breaking performances came in the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley. Nora Segurola Larrinaga established a new school record in the 100-yard back with a time of 55.54. At the same time, freshman Riley Edmundson broke a freshman record for the third time this weekend in establishing a new top time for Bulldog freshmen in the 400-yard individual medley clocking in at 4:29.41. The other freshman record also came in the 100-yard backstroke as Grace Adams posted a time of 56.38.
When the swimmers returned to the pool for the finals, the Bulldogs kept the momentum rolling. Asheville clinched a trio of first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.80) and the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke. Larrinaga clinched the top spot in the 100-yard back and bested her school record that she set earlier in the day, clocking in at 54.66. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Fullerton turned in her NCAA provisional cut performance and set a new school record in the process.
Asheville was not done rewriting the record books as Edmundson returned and broke her freshman record in the 400-yard individual medley that she set earlier Saturday with a time of 4:27.60. It marks the fourth straight swim that Edmundson has broken or re-broke a freshman record.
Asheville broke two school records during the evening session, one freshman record, logged 10 new season-best times, earned three first-place finishes, and six lifetime-best swims.
After two days of action in Charlotte, the Bulldogs are second on the team leaderboard with 1,006 points.
In the final day of diving action at the TYR '85 Invitational, the Bulldogs had three divers compete in Jade Canady, Morgan Coughlen, and Jessica Brock. Canady led all divers placing 14th with a point total of 190.25 in 1-meter diving. Coughlen and Brock were not far behind, and all three divers topped their respective point totals from the prelims to the finals.
The Bulldog swimmers will wrap up the Fall Frenzy Invitational on Sunday. Prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the finals to follow at 5 p.m.
