Asheville announces Mark Patterson hired as Assistant AD for Business and Finance

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville Athletics Department announced that Mark Patterson has been hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Business and Finance.Â
"I'm very excited to be joining the UNC Asheville Athletics team," Patterson said. "I'd like to thank Janet Cone, the administration, and coaches for welcoming me. Go Bulldogs!"
Patterson joins the Bulldogs after spending six years at the University of Memphis, most recently serving as the Athletic Business Manager. At Memphis, Patterson was responsible for overseeing internal operations of the business office. Prior to his time at Memphis, Patterson spent three years at Radford University. His roles included Ticket Manager, Assistant Business Manager, and finally Administrative Services manager.
"We are excited to have Mark join the Bulldog Team," Director of Athletics Janet Cone said. "His past experiences at Memphis and Radford will be extremely helpful as we continue to manage the financial challenges in this current climate. His knowledge of financial planning and forecasting will help us establish a more stable financial future for Bulldog Athletics."
While at Memphis, Patterson used zero-based budgeting, activity-based accounting and cost center management while collaborating with coaches and unit managers to develop and manage budgets for 19 sports exceeding $55 million. During his tenure at Memphis, Patterson was also the public address announcer for various sports and has served as the play-by-play broadcaster for the NCAA Rifle National championship as well as the staff senate Vice President for the University.
After a year at North Texas (facilities/concessions), Patterson worked as the General Manager of an indoor baseball and softball training facility in Laurel, Maryland and spent time working as game-day staff for the Baltimore Orioles AAA team, the Norfolk Tides, and the Tampa Bay Lightning's AHL team, the Norfolk Admirals.
Patterson is a member of the Collegiate Athletics Business Management Association. He earned a bachelor's degree in sports management with a minor in environmental and business economics from Rutgers University in 2007 and a master's degree in sport management in 2011 from Old Dominion University. He presented his master's thesis at the 2011 College Research Institute Conference at UNC-Chapel Hill.
A native of Nutley, New Jersey, Patterson now resides in Asheville, North Carolina, with his Boston Terrier, "Willbur," and his two cats, "Bird," and "Charlie."
