ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville athletics welcomed back a record-number of student-athletes for the 2020-21 academic year Sunday afternoon via a special Zoom call.
The annual "Welcome Back" event marks the 18th straight year that the Bulldogs have welcomed student-athletes back to campus with this edition being the first one held virtually.
Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone along with Chancellor Nancy Cable began the program by addressing the Bulldogs followed by short talks from Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Success Rebecca Nelms and the 2020-21 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President Bryson Lee.
This year's special guest speaker was former Director of Athletics and Recreation at Northeastern University, Peter Roby. Afterward, Roby addressed questions from Bulldog student-athletes and coaches on a variety of topics to help advise them on the unique academic year that begins tomorrow.
"My first impression of Mr. Roby was that he wants to see people succeed," said track & field student-athlete Ke'Shonna Gay. "Although it is about "we", his talk today pushed me to think what can "I" do so that "we" can succeed to our full potential. I felt as if I could actually connect to him. His leadership skills are very aspiring. I hope to meet him again someday."
"Having the privilege to "meet" Mr. Roby on our student-athlete welcome back webinar today was exceptional," said Head Swimming & Diving Coach Elizabeth Lykins. "His experiences as a black American, a former student-athlete, and a Division I Athletic Director provide an outstanding perspective. Mr. Roby's advice to be flexible, exercise your right to vote, and take opportunities to teach each other with grace is essential as we begin this unprecedented year in the classroom and on the playing field/court/pool."
