Men’s Soccer Returns Home for In-State Matchup with UNCG

09.17.2019 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team returns home to host in-state foe UNC Greensboro in a 6 p.m., Wednesday, contest at Greenwood Soccer Field. It will serve as the second match of a double-header, as the women's soccer team is set to square off with Western Carolina at 3:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (1-3-1) are coming off of a pair of narrow defeats on the road last week, 2-1 against Furman on a last-minute goal from the Paladins, and 1-0 in a defensive struggle against Evansville.

UNC Asheville is unbeaten in its first two matches at home this season. The Bulldogs defeated VMI, 2-1, on September 4 and battled reigning Sun Belt Champion Georgia State to a 2-2 draw, September 7.

This will be the 10th all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since 2012, a contest UNCG won 5-0.

House of Payne
Freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne earned recognition as the Big South Freshman of the Week, September 9, for his performances against VMI, and namely, against Georgia State. Against the Panthers, Payne recorded 17 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.

The rookie followed up that performance with 14 saves against Furman, last Wednesday and another five against Evansville, Saturday. He has 47 total saves on the season, which is the most in the country, and an .836 save percentage.

Balanced Attack
Junior Tyson Hichman has been the go-to man in the early part of the season, leading the way with three goals scored in four matches. Most recently, he scored an equalizing goal in the Bulldogs' matchup against Furman, last Wednesday. He scored the game-winner at home against VMI and also forced the pressure that caused an own-goal for VMI.

Senior Dino Dziergas has moved to the back line this season, but has still maintained a presence in the offensive attack, scoring a goal on Senior Day against Georgia State. He also leads the team with two assists, recording a helper on Hichman's goal against Furman and his first of the year at Navy.

Junior Colin Daughtry has scored as well for the Bulldogs, and seniors Kyle Adams and Luiz Felipe Dantas have each come up with assists.

Scouting the Spartans
UNCG is 1-4 on the season, with their lone victory coming at home in the season opener against George Washington, 2-0. Most recently, UNCG fell to Big South foe Campbell on the road, 2-0, last Friday.

Albert Pedra and Micah Albert lead the team offensively with two goals and one assist apiece. Riley Copeland and Casey Penland each have scored a goal this season, while Mylo Hall and Ethan Conley each have one assist. Ricky Zarri has started all five matches in goal for the Spartans, recording 18 saves and allowing nine goals.
