09.10.2019 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer team returns to the road after an unbeaten two-match home stand when it travels to Furman for a 7 p.m., Wednesday, contest in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Bulldogs (1-1-1) are coming off a 2-1 victory against VMI, Wednesday night, and a 2-2 draw against the defending Sun Belt champion Georgia State Panthers, Saturday. Wednesday's contest against Furman will be the first road test for the Bulldogs since playing at Navy to open the season.

The meeting between the Bulldogs and the Paladins (2-1-1) will be the 20th all-time in the series, which the Paladins lead 15-0-4. The Bulldogs battled the Paladins to a 1-1 draw at home a season ago, with Taylor Durall heading in a cross from Miles Peay in the 87th minute to even the match.

Wednesday evening's match will be streamed on the SoCon Digital Network HERE and fans can follow along via live stats HERE.

Big South Freshman of the Week
Freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne earned recognition as the Big South Freshman of the Week for his performances against VMI, and namely, against Georgia State. Against the Panthers, Payne recorded 17 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute. On the season, Payne has 27 saves and an .818 save percentage.

A Team Effort
Three different student-athletes have scored a goal so far this season for the Bulldogs. Junior Tyson Hichman was the man early, scoring the squad's lone goal at Navy, while recording the game-winning goal against VMI. He also forced the pressure against the Keydets that led to an own-goal.

Against Georgia State, two others got into the mix, as junior Colin Daughtry scored his first goal of the season less than a minute in, and senior Dino Dziergas followed that up with a goal in the 18th minute.

Three different Bulldogs – Dziergas, Kyle Adams and Luiz Felipe Dantas – have recorded an assist on the season.

Scouting the Paladins
The match will serve as the home opener for Furman, who is coming off a 2-0 weekend after defeating Big South foes Gardner-Webb (5-4 OT) and Winthrop (3-0). The weekend prior, the Paladins opened with a narrow 1-0 loss to Duke and tied 3-3 against Elon.

Furman is led offensively by Cole McLagan, who has put five into the back into the net through the first four matches. Conor Sloan has scored twice and also has a pair of assists, while four other Paladins have recorded at least one goal.
