ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Bulldog Athletic Association raised more than $136,000 toward athletic scholarships during its two-day Scholarship Golf Classic at the Country Club of Asheville, Monday and Tuesday.

The BAA Scholarship Golf Classic, presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, brought in the most money for athletic scholarships in the event's history.

"I want to send my sincerest thanks to all of our donors and sponsors who played in the Bulldog Athletic Association Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday! Their support allows us to enhance our student-athlete experience at UNC Asheville by providing funding for athletic scholarships," UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone said.

"I would also like to thank Betsy Blose, David Jandrew and Dan Freeman for all of their efforts planning and running the tournament, and for all of our coaches and staff that came out to the course to help make this event possible. I also have to send a huge thank you to BAA Golf Committee Chair Bruce Goforth for all of his tireless work on this tournament this year and every year."

Though the forecast seemed bleak at times and the skies were mostly cloudy, the rain held off for the 208 golfers that participated over the two days. The grounds crew at the Country Club of Asheville worked tirelessly to ensure the course was in top-notch shape for the event.

"This golf tournament over the last eight or 10 years has raised over $105,00 a year, so it's huge for athletic scholarships for UNC Asheville," Goforth said. "Our community has just stepped up as far as providing prizes and sponsorship."

One of the most exciting moments came Tuesday when Rob Fisher sunk a hole-in-one on the 13th hole and left the course with a sparkling new Ford Mustang, courtesy of Ken Wilson Ford. He also took home an iPad, courtesy of Young Transportation.

The Bulldog student-athletes also played in a role in the event, as members of each UNC Asheville team were on hand both days to welcome the golfers to the tournament and to offer encouragement throughout different parts of the course.

Additionally, Bulldog student-athletes hand wrote thank you notes that were left in each of the carts, thanking the participants for their generosity by helping to provide for scholarships.
