ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The 2019 version of UNC Asheville's men's soccer program took to the pitch for its first scrimmage of the season in the annual Blue and White Game, Saturday.

The team's intrasquad scrimmage offered a glimpse of this year's Bulldogs, as head coach Mathes Mennell mixed and matched players, with some getting time on both squads.
Strong defensive efforts by both teams defined the majority of the first half as they forced a number of shots from distance. However, the white team found an offensive rhythm toward the end of the first frame.

After a couple attacks with promise, the White Team nearly broke through as sophomore Liam O'Dowd put a cross into the box sophomore Miles Peay nearly connected with. Just minutes later, sophomore Nate Evans broke the deadlock with a strike to put the White Team on top, 1-0, at the half.

The Blue Team came out of the break with offensive urgency, and redshirt sophomore Taylor Durall nearly got the squad on the board, but his header attempt was a near miss.

The White Team found its groove again, as a laser from junior Colin Daughtry glanced off the left post. The White Team would add to its lead as freshman Andrew Rossetti collected a pass in front of goal and buried it in the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Team had a couple more promising chances, as another strong effort from Durall went just wide. In the final three minutes, Peay – who moved to the Blue Team in the second half – had his shot nearly miss on great ball into the box from freshman A.J. DeVivo.

The Bulldogs have two home exhibition games on the docket for next week, as they host East Tennessee in a 6 p.m. contest, Monday, followed by a 3:30 p.m., Friday, match against Marshall. Their season will begin in earnest at the Naval Academy, Friday, August 30.
