Official AVCA Release

LEXINGTON, Ky. – UNC Asheville volleyball has been chosen as a 2018-19 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Academic Team.

The AVCA made the official announcement on Monday, July 22, 2019.

"I am so proud of our team for this important academic recognition," UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos said. "Our players worked incredibly hard in the classroom and deserve this honor."

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The AVCA Team Academic Award is the single largest award offered by quantity of schools, players and coaches honored. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but two, while more than doubling the total over the last eight academic years. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 1,125.

As a team, UNC Asheville closed out the 2018-19 athletic year with a team grade-point average of 3.469.

UNC Asheville volleyball won 10 of its last 11 matches to close out the 2018 season.

UNC Asheville's 10-match winning streak that was snapped in its Big South Tournament semifinal loss to High Point was its longest winning streak since 2005.

UNC Asheville's 16 wins this past season were the most for the Bulldogs since winning 17 in the 2013 season.
