Big South Video Recap

For Kyle Adams of UNC Asheville men's soccer the most exciting part was seeing at least for one weekend all of the Big South institutions come together to learn as a group.

"While I did not get the chance to learn everyone's life stories, it was nice to see members from the conference outside of athletics having a fun time and embracing the knowledge bestowed upon us," Adams noted. "Our main speakers, Timothy Alexander and Sterling Brown, were truly inspiring and have prompted a shift in my own personal standards. I hope this shift will positively impact my team's culture and anyone I come to meet in the future."

Adams' thoughts come after a fun weekend for all involved at the 2019 Big South Leadership Conference sponsored by Musco Sports Lighting. The event was held July 5-7 in Black Mountain, N.C.

The 2019 Big South Leadership Conference was designed to help the student-athletes in attendance learn leadership and teamwork skills that carry over into campus and then their professional careers.

UNC Asheville athletics was represented at the annual event by Adams, Jasmine Cox of track & field, Nadiria Evans of women's basketball and Bryson Lee of women's soccer. All are active in the UNC Asheville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

"I really enjoyed this conference," Evans said. "I was able to learn numerous things through fun and games, but also some amazing guest speakers. Sterling Brown and Timothy Alexander were the big takeaways from this conference. Tim really used his story and his experiences to connect with us and really draw our attention. I think we were all amazed by not only his story, but also the person it made him today."

A member of the Asheville City Soccer Club women's team this summer, Lee, the 2019-20 UNC Asheville SAAC President, was only able to attend some of the events over the weekend, but she hopes some of the things learned will help to grow the SAAC on campus over the course of the upcoming year.

"I hope we are more involved all year and we help encourage and support every team at our University," Lee said. "We used the conference to get ideas and learn skills on how we can continue to expand and lead SAAC in a positive direction."

The 2019-20 UNC Asheville SAAC Vice President, Cox really enjoyed the whole experience afforded to her by the Big South Conference.

"I made so many friends and learned so much about the conference I represent," Cox said. "Some of the best things I learned revolved around resilience and learning to push past adversity and how a strong character makes resilience so much easier to demonstrate. The most exciting things were the game nights at the end of each day. Some seriously real relationships were built during this time. The experience was so surreal and being surrounded by people with the similar goals and aspirations was a different feeling. I also built closer relationships with those from our school that went alongside me."

Adams, who will be the Secretary for the SAAC at UNC Asheville this upcoming year, knows that the unique opportunity of talking to other SAAC officers allows the Bulldog group that attended to have "more of a presence through our service and devotion to our peers on campus and in our community."

"I am thrilled to have represented UNC Asheville this past weekend, and I hope that anyone that gets an opportunity like this in the future takes it," Adams continued. "One of the most important takeaways I had endured reflecting on why I do what I do and who I do it for; these serve as the foundation for my values as a leader and individual. The other takeaway I find most relevant is a quote from one of our speakers that says, "There is no 'I' in team but there is in 'win.' It is important to be selfless. However in order to do so, we must find ourselves first."
