CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women's indoor track and field team was awarded the Big South Conference Sportsmanship Award, which was announced by the league office on Tuesday, April 2, 2019.
The Sportsmanship Award is the second time the UNC Asheville women's indoor program has received the accolade. The Bulldogs won their first Sportsmanship Award in the 2012 season.
Also, it is the second time this year that UNC Asheville track and field/cross country has received the Sportsmanship Award, as the women's cross country team won the honor earlier this academic year.
During the 2018-19 season, the women's indoor track team had 13 performances jump into the top-5 indoor record book.
In fact, Claudia Prieto Alcaide broke the school record this year in the long jump with a mark of 5.55m. Joining her in the top 5 in that event was Asia Washington and Sydney DeBerry.
Prieto also posted the second-fastest mark in school history in the 55m. She posted a time of 7.35.
Junior Desire Brown also etched her name in the record book in several events – 300m, 400m and 500m. She now has the second-fastest time in school history in the 300m and is in the top 5 in the other two events.
Freshman Khadeesha Crumbly also joined Brown in the 300m marks, as she now has the third-fastest all-time mark.
Rookie Kindra Mingo also had a strong year, as she holds the fifth-fastest times in school history in the 60m and 200m.
