UNC Asheville to Compete at Gamecock Invitational This Weekend

COLULMBIA, S.C. – The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams are set to kick off the month of April by competing at the single-day Gamecock Invitational on April 13, 2019.
BULLDOG BITES
Last Time Out – Terrier Relays
UNC Asheville's men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Terrier Relays on March 29-30 in Spartanburg, S.C. The meet was hosted by Wofford College.
On the first day of the meet, Jack Choiniere had the best overall finish for UNC Asheville in the men's shot put. The freshman finished eighth overall with a toss of 14.05m. That toss is now the fourth-longest throw in program history. He was only 0.41m from matching the top-5 finisher.
UNC Asheville only had four athletes compete on the first day of the meet with most of the events being held on the second day.
Junior Graham Parker started the second day of the meet with a bang, as he finished fourth overall in the men's 5000m. He finished with a time of 15:33.65.
Two Bulldogs raced in the women's 5000m, and the pair earned top-20 finishes. Megan Brewer had the highest finish with a mark of 19:56.85 en route to 11th place. Savannah Vickers also competed and clocked a time of 21:43.44.
In the first relay event for UNC Asheville, the Bulldogs ran in the men's 4 x 100m. Consisting of Akin Williams, Denley Joseph, Lee Goings and Tyree McFalling, the four Bulldogs combined for a 42.04 mark, which is now the second-fastest mark in school history. They finished fifth overall out of 15 teams.
On the women's side 4 x 100m, Claudia Prieto Alcaide, Kindra Mingo, Desire Brown and Asia Washington raced for Asheville. The four Bulldogs earned a time of 48.24, which placed them sixth overall.
Sage Turner and Thomas Little ran fast in the men's 1500m, as they both finished in the top 20 out of 62 runners. Turner had the seventh-fastest overall time with a mark of 4:03.76. Little finished 20th overall, as the junior recorded a time of 4:13.91.
In the women's 1500m, UNC Asheville had two runners finish in the top 10 - Kelley Coleman and Madeline Nichols. Coleman placed fifth overall with a 4:49.82 time. Nichols finished just four seconds behind her teammate en route to a ninth-place finish.
In the men's 110m hurdles, Jeff Blake posted a top-10 finish with a 15.49 time.
Akin Williams was the lone Bulldog to finish in the top 20 in the men's 100m, as the freshman finished 18th overall. He posted a time of 11.09 and was only 0.13 seconds away from moving into the top 10.
Desire Brown paced the Bulldogs in the women's 100m. The junior earned a time of 12.40, which is now the fourth-fastest time in program history. Khadeesha Crumbly nearly joined the top-5 all-time in program history, as the rookie clocked a time of 12.61.
Zach Boone clocked a fast time in the men's 3000m. The junior finished with a 10:04.01, which placed him fourth overall. That mark is now a career-best time for the distance runner.
Huntyr Hopkins was the lone Bulldog to compete in the women's high jump, and the rookie posted a mark of 1.50m en route to a fifth-place finish.
In the women's javelin, Chelsea Salmon paced the Bulldogs with a ninth-place finish. The rookie made a toss of 26.73m.
Jack Choiniere medaled with a third-place finish in the men's discus, as he made a toss of 44.65m. That mark is the second-longest of his career.
About the Gamecock Invitational
The Gamecock Invitational is a single-day meet hosted by the University of South Carolina on April 13, 2019. The competition will be held at the Sheila and Morris Cregger Track on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C.
The single-day competition is set to host a total of 50 events.
There will be 16 field events beginning at 9:00 am with women's hammer and men's javelin. The field events will conclude at 4:30 pm with women's shot put and men's discus.
There will be 34 track events throughout the day beginning at 9:00 am with the men's 5000m. The meet will conclude with the men's and women's 4x400m relay beginning with the men at 6 pm and the women at 6:20 pm.

What's Next?
The UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams are scheduled to compete in the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C. next weekend. The two-day meet will take place on April 19-20.
