Hopkins Jumps Into UNC Asheville’s Record Book in the High Jump

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Huntyr Hopkins headlined the results for UNC Asheville track and field on Friday at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational, as the jumper is now tied for fifth in the UNC Asheville record books in the women's high jump.

Hopkins made a jump of 1.55m in the event, which tied Lauren Baker's mark that was set during the 2012 season.

Highlights

For the first time this year, two Bulldogs - Chelsea Salmon and Ke'Shonna Gay - competed in the women's javelin. Salmon led the Bulldogs with a toss of 20.64m, and that mark placed her 27th overall.

Three Bulldogs competed in the women's long jump - Claudia Prieto Alcaide, Asia Washington and Mydison Askew. Prieto earned a top-5 finish with her 5.34 mark, and Washington finished in the top 15 with her 5.01m leap.

Headlining Friday's results, Hopkins was the lone Bulldog representative in the women's high jump. The freshman finished eighth overall with a mark of 1.55m, and that result is now tied for fifth in UNC Asheville's all-time history.

Senior Kelley Coleman ran fast in the women's 3000m, as she led UNC Asheville with her third-place time. The distance runner clocked a 10:33.79 time, which was only a few seconds away from the first-place finisher. Madeline Nichols also earned a top-12 finish, as the rookie clocked an 11:07.03. Senior Megan Brewer also finished in the top half of the event, as she clocked a 11:25.71 time.

In her second event on Friday, Hopkins competed in the women's 200m open. The rookie earned a seventh-place finish with a time of 28.05. She was only 0.26 seconds from jumping into the top 5.

Samantha Decker and Samantha Hirsch represented UNC Asheville with two top-6 finishes in the women's one mile open. Decker led the Bulldogs with a time of 5:44.56, as the freshman finished fourth overall. Hirsch finished in sixth with a time of 5:48.43.

On the men's side of the one mile open, Matthew Barrera clocked a fast time en route to a sixth-place finish. The senior earned a mark of 4:46.55, and he was just over a second away from moving into the top five.

After her performance in the women's long jump, Washington earned a fourth-place finish in the women's 100m qualifiers. The sophomore clocked a 12.45 mark, which was only 0.13 seconds from the first-place finisher. Prieto and Askew also raced in the qualifier event, as they earned 12.77 and 13.03 times, respectively. 

Four Bulldogs ran in the men's 100m qualifier, and the foursome all finished inside the top 25. Lee Goings, Denley Joseph and Akin Williams finished within four places of each other at 11th, 14th and 15th, respectively. Goings had the fastest time at 11.065. Joseph followed with an 11.075, and Williams clocked an 11.08. Victor Mathuthu was the final Bulldog in the race, and he posted an 11.28 time.

The Bulldogs sent out two relay teams to race in the women's 4 x 800m. Asheville's 'A' team finished third behind Maryland-Eastern Shore and Salisbury. The four Bulldogs posted a 10:10.69 time. The 'B' team ran an 11:17.94 time en route to a seventh-place finish.

In the men's 110m hurdles, Jeff Blake was the lone Bulldog to run in the event. The freshman clocked a time of 15.75 and placed 16th overall.

In the final race on Friday, Thomas Little and Sage Turner represented UNC Asheville. Little finished 17th out of the 56-person field with a 15:42.71 time. Turner was six spots behind his teammate with a 15:56.00 time.

What's Next?

Saturday will feature 30 total events in the three-day meet. The first event on Sunday will be the men's discus at 9 a.m.
