Prieto Breaks School Record on Opening Day of Big South Indoor Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va.
– Behind a new school record from Claudia Prieto Alcaide in the women's long jump and five other Bulldogs posting top-5 finishes in UNC Asheville history, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the opening day of the Big South Conference Indoor Championships on Friday inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex.

In the first event of the day for the Bulldogs (women's long jump), Prieto Alcaide shattered the UNC Asheville indoor school record by 0.04m. The rookie made a jump of 5.55m, which placed her fourth overall in the conference championship event. Bulldog alum Argia Gibson held the previous-best mark for UNC Asheville, which was set in 2014. Teammate Asia Washington placed 10th overall in the long jump with a leap of 5.19m. 

In the first track event of the indoor championships (men's 400m), Tyree McFalling kept the momentum rolling with a third-place finish. The junior ran a 49.56 time, which was only 0.06 seconds off from matching his personal record in the event. He will be the lone Bulldog representative in the 400m finals. Grant Lindsay also ran in the event, as he finished 18th with a 53.34.

For the third straight event, Desire Brown posted another fast mark, as the junior matched the third-fastest mark in program history in the women's 400m. With her time of 57.77, she matched Kayli Nichols in the Bulldog record books. Brown qualified for the finals, which will take place on Saturday afternoon. Khadeesha Crumbly also ran in the event, as the rookie finished 13th with a 1:01.74.

Freshman Kindra Mingo also joined the record books, as the Cypress, Texas native clocked a 7.95 time in the women's 60m dash. That time tied her for fourth in UNC Asheville history and placed her 15th overall in the event. Teammates Prieto and Asia Washington finished 16th and 17th, respectively. Prieto clocked a 7.99 time, while Washington earned an 8.00 mark. 

On the men's side of the 60m dash, Akin Williams led the UNC Asheville runners with a ninth-place finish. The rookie clocked a 7.05 time and was only one spot away from qualifying for the finals on Saturday. The time also marked the fourth-fastest indoor time in program history. Fellow teammate Denley Joseph finished 16th in the prelims with a time of 7.15.

Alyx Evans led UNC Asheville in the women's 800m. The Wisconsin native ran a 2:21.34 time en route to a ninth-place finish. She was also one spot away from qualifying for the finals on Saturday. Senior Kelley Petroski also ran in the event, as she clocked a 2:39.39.

Rookie distance runner Jack Clemens was the lone Bulldog in the men's 800m, as he clocked a 2:02.98 time.

Following her impressive time in the women's 60m, Mingo ran in the 200m dash. The freshman finished 13th overall with a 25.89 time. She was only 0.19 seconds away from moving into the top 10.

Joseph and Williams ran in the men's 200 for UNC Asheville. Joseph finished 14th out of 21 runners with a 22.47 time, while Williams clocked a 22.93 time in the event.

In the women's shot put, Julia McAfee made an impressive toss of 10.19m. Teammate Ke'Shonna Gay also competed in the event and made a hurl of 8.60m.

Huntyr Hopkins competed in the final women's field event on Friday, as the rookie posted a mark of 1.50m in the high jump. That marked placed her tied for eighth overall. 

In the lone throws event on the men's side, Jack Choiniere represented UNC Asheville with a strong finish. The rookie made a toss of 14.25m, which place him seventh overall.

Senior Kelley Coleman nearly finished within the top 5, as she placed sixth overall. She clocked an 18:39.88 time.

Zach Boone also earned his way into the Bulldog record books, as he posted the fifth-fastest time in UNC Asheville history in the men's 5000m. The senior from Bakersville, N.C. earned a time of 15.13.96, which placed him fifth. Thomas Little finished roughly 15 seconds behind Boone (15:28.02), as Little finished eighth overall in the same event.

In the women's distance medley relay, UNC Asheville placed fifth overall with a 12:50.39 time. Megan Brewer, Crumbly, Evans and Madeline Nichols were the four Bulldogs that represented UNC Asheville in the event.

Consisting of Graham Parker, McFalling, Blanton Gillespie and Sage Turner, the four Bulldogs finished sixth overall with a 10:35.13 time in the men's distance medley relay.

In the final field even on Friday, Victor Mathuthu was the lone Asheville athlete in the men's long jump. The sophomore made a jump of 6.71m, which earned him a top-10 finish. 

What's Next?

The Big South Indoor Championships will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 16 inside the Liberty Indoor Track Complex. The first field events will start at 1 p.m. with the women's weight throw, women's triple jump and men's high jump. The first track events will be the men's and women's mile at 2 p.m.
