Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Finish Top Five at Big South Championships; Little, Boone and Appleton All Receive Postseason Honors

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – UNC Asheville's men's cross country team finished fourth at the Big South Championships Saturday while the women's team claimed a fifth place finish.
It is now the third consecutive year that the men have finished fourth overall in the Big South.
With their fifth place finish, the women have now finished in the top six in the Big South every year since 2012.
Thomas Little led the Bulldogs in the men's 8K with a ninth place finish with a time of 25:34.16. Little was exactly 30 seconds off from a top five finish and right at two minutes behind the first place finisher. The ninth place finish is Little's highest finish ever at the Big South Championships.
Sage Turner, Zach Boone and John Ciprich all stayed under the 27 minute mark and finished in the top 25. Turner claimed a 20th place finish with a time of 26:21.79. Boone was three seconds behind his teammate with a time of 26:24.04 and a 21st place finish. Ciprich secured a 24th place finish with a time of 26:42.05.
In the women's 5K race, Madeline Nichols paced the Bulldogs with a time 19:18.37 and a 23rd place finish. India Appleton and Alyx Evans finished a second apart with times of 20:03.26 and 20:04.73, respectively.
Morgan Costelloe and Samantha Decker each finished under the 21 minute mark with Costelloe finishing with a time of 20:18.24 and Decker securing a time of 20:54.53.
All-Conference
UNC Asheville had three runners that were awarded with postseason honors during an awards ceremony Saturday afternoon.
Thomas Little was named to the All-Conference team after claiming a top 10 finish in the Big South Championships. Little set his career best 8K time of 24.49.4 this year at the Greater Louisville Classic and also set his career best 5K time of 15:11.0 in a dual meet versus Montreat this fall as well.
The Bulldogs also had two members of the Big South All-Academic team this season. Senior Zach Boone was the representative from the men's team with a 3.656 GPA as a Computer Science major. Sophomore India Appleton was named to the women's All-Academic team after posting a 4.0 GPA as an Environmental Science major and an Economics minor.

The Bulldogs will compete at the Montreat Open, Friday, November 8, at 4 p.m. as a final tune up before the NCAA Southeast Regionals.
