UNC Asheville Announces Four Additions to Bulldog Soccer

11.15.2019 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer coach Mathes Mennell announced four additions who will join the program as freshmen for the 2020 campaign.

All four high school signees hail from North Carolina – two of whom are Asheville products – and three of the four will enroll in classes for the Spring 2020 semester.

Justin Fleer | Forward/Midfielder | 6-0, 185 | Asheville, N.C. | Asheville HS
Fleer scored 70 goals and recorded 40 assists during his career at Asheville High School. He earned All-WMAC and All-Region honors in 2017 and 2018, and he was an All-State selection in 2018. The 2019 versions of those teams have yet to be announced.

In addition to playing for Asheville High, Fleer also competed for the Highland Football Club. Fleer will join the Bulldogs for the 2020 Spring semester.

Mennell on Fleer:
"Justin is player we have had our eye on for some time.  He has been a standout for both his HFC 01 Red team and at Asheville High School. He has also been a rostered player with Asheville City Soccer Club this past summer. The part that excites me the most about Justin choosing UNC Asheville is it says a lot about what our current group is doing and that the top local talent continues to want to be part of our process."

Wes Ferry | Defender | 6-2, 190 | Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point (Havelock, N.C.) | Havelock HS
Ferry was voted a team captain each of the past two seasons at Havelock High School, and was an All-Conference selection as a junior and senior as well. He competed for Swansboro Coastal Force in club competition.

Ferry participated in the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Europe in 2016 and 2017, and was a part of the USYS NC ODP Team each of the past three years. He has also been in the USYS South Region ODP pool each of the past two years.

Ferry will join the Bulldogs for the 2020 Spring semester.

Mennell on Ferry:
"Wes is a player we identified at Train Like a Bulldog. He is a big, strong, physical defender but also has a great engine, loves to run at players, is keen to make an impact on the game from wide areas, and is a very tough young man. He is going to be a nice addition to our team as a defender. He has spent a considerable amount of time overseas (father is a USMC Colonel) and played with the youth teams of SV Hoffeld, TV Echterdingen in Germany from 2013-2016. He is a high character student-athlete who will be a fantastic addition to the UNC Asheville community."

Silas Goss | Midfielder/Forward | 5-10 | Shelby, N.C. | Shelby HS
Goss earned All-Conference accolades as a sophomore and junior, and earned recognition as the Conference Player of the Year last season. He earned All-State honors in 2018 as well. Additionally, he was the kicker for the Shelby High football team that won the 2A State Championship in 2018.

Goss was selected to the North Carolina Olympic Development 2001 Team from 2013-2019, and selected to the US Youth Soccer South Region 2000 Boys ODP Regional Team each of the past two years.

In addition to Shelby High, Goss also competed for Strikers of Gaston Country Soccer Association in club action. Goss will join the Bulldogs for the 2020 Spring semester.

Mennell on Goss:
"Silas is a unique athlete. He has varsity letters in soccer and football. He brings this variety of skill-sets to his play on the pitch as he is able to cover ground, is hard-nosed, and is very athletic. He is pacey, very two-footed and is able to play in a variety of positions and systems. These are qualities which make for very good players in the college game."

Luke Sloan | Defender | 5-11 | Asheville, N.C. | A.C. Reynolds HS
Sloan earned selection as an All-WMAC and All-Region honoree in 2018, with the 2019 announcements still yet to be made.

Sloan competed with Fleer on the Highland Football Club, in addition to his time with A.C. Reynolds High School. He will join the Bulldogs for the 2020 Fall semester.

Mennell on Sloan:
"Luke is legacy here at UNC Asheville as his father played here (Steve Sloan), his sister is on the Women's Soccer team, and his brother also attends UNC Asheville. He is a very hard working defender with the ability to provide wonderful left footed service. He is versatile, very tenacious and gritty, and he understands the game. All of these will stand him in very good stead here at UNC Asheville and in the Big South."
