10.01.2019 | Men's Soccer
ASHEVILLE – UNC Asheville's men's soccer hosts its first Big South Conference home match of the season when it welcomes High Point to Greenwood Field for a 6 p.m., Wednesday, contest as part of a home doubleheader.
The men's match will take place about 30 minutes following the women's match against High Point, slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs (2-6-1, 1-0 Big South) are coming off of their first road victory of the season after opening league play with a 1-0 victory at USC Upstate, Saturday.
The Panthers won last season's matchup in overtime, 2-1, at Vert Stadium. Taylor Durall gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at the half, but the Panthers scored the equalizer with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation and scored the golden goal with just six seconds left in the match.
House of Payne
Freshman goalkeeper Jarrett Payne earned recognition as the Big South Freshman of the Week, September 9, for his performances against VMI, and namely, against Georgia State. Against the Panthers, Payne recorded 17 saves, including a diving stop on a penalty kick in the 32nd minute.
The rookie followed up that performance with 14 saves against Furman the following week. Payne recorded the first shutout of his young career, Saturday, at USC Upstate, saving eight total shots in the match. He has 70 total saves on the season, which is the most in the country and 13 more than second place in the rankings.
Offensive Attack
Junior Tyson Hichman has been the go-to man in the early part of the season, leading the way with four goals scored in nine matches, which is tied for 59th in the country in goals scored. His four goals already equal the Bulldogs' individual team-high of four scored by Izaiah Vignali last season. He scored the Bulldogs' lone goal against UNC Greensboro, last Wednesday night. He has one game-winner as well, scoring the difference-maker against VMI at home, September 4.
Sophomore Nate Evans scored his first goal of the season against USC Upstate, Saturday, and it proved to be the difference maker – his second-career goal and first-career game-winner.
Senior Dino Dziergas has moved to the back line this season, but has still maintained a presence in the offensive attack, scoring a goal on Senior Day against Georgia State. He also leads the team with two assists, recording a helper on Hichman's goal against Furman and his first of the year at Navy.
Junior Colin Daughtry has scored as well for the Bulldogs and assisted on Evans' game winner against Upstate, and seniors Kyle Adams and Luiz Felipe Dantas have each come up with assists.
Scouting the Panthers
The Panthers are 4-4 on the season and also enter Wednesday's matchup having opened conference play with a victory, taking down Winthrop, 2-0, at home. They are 1-3 this season on the road, with their lone victory away from home coming against Elon, 1-0.
Siggi Benonysson and Jordan Lonchar each have scored two goals this season for the Panthers, while Ryan Inman and Alex Abril each have scored a goal and notched an assist on the year.
Despite only scoring six goals this season, the Panthers have only surrendered six. Keegan Meyer has started all eight matches in goal for High Point, recording 27 saves.
