UNC Asheville Opens Competition at the 2019 Keydet Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. – To open the 2019 Keydet Invitational, the UNC Asheville men's and women's track & field teams competed in the two-day event on Friday inside the Corps Physical Training Facility.

Highlights

Victor Mathuthu kicked off the meet for the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish. The sophomore made a leap of 14.31 in the triple jump, and his mark was only 0.34 meters from matching the third-place finisher.

Freshman Akin Williams led the Bulldogs in the men's 60m. The rookie qualified for the semifinals with a 7.11 mark. In the semifinals, Williams ran a 7.12 en route to an 18th-place honor. Tyree McFalling and Lee Goings also represented UNC Asheville, as they finished 33rd and 34th, respectively.

On the women's side of the 60m, Claudia Prieto Alcaide led the Bulldogs, as the freshman qualified for the semifinals. In her prelim, Prieto Alcaide ran a 7.98 to be the final runner to qualify for the semifinals. In the semis, she improved her time by 0.03 seconds to finish 19th overall.

Sophomore Asia Washington placed 21st in the women's triple jump. She made a leap of 9.84m.

Desire Brown was the final Bulldog competitor on Friday for the Bulldogs, as she ran in the women's 500m. The junior posted a 1:22.37 time and placed 20th out of 35 runners.

What's Next?

Both UNC Asheville track & field teams will conclude competition at the 2019 Keydet Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19. The first field event will be the men's long jump, and the first track event will be the men's one mile run. Both events start at 10 a.m.
