BULLDOG BITES
About the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs (1-7-1, 0-2-0 Big South) are led on the year by freshmen Lane Carroll and Izaiah Vignali, who both have two goals on the season. Vignali is leading the team in points with five, as he also has an assist. Seven Bulldogs have scored on the year in total.
About the Paladins
Furman travels to Asheville owning an even 4-4 record on the 2018 season. Laurence Wyke leads the Paladins on the season with three goals.
Quotable
"Furman's really good," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "Much like us they are a team that if you look at the record it does not tell the story. They have played a really good Charlotte team really close and Charlotte's in an excellent run of form. People may look at their Clemson result, but people forget Clemson is an ACC team that is also really good. Furman is a really good side that causes a lot of issues. One of the reasons that we scheduled them is that they are very, very stingy defensively. It's not so much that they don't give up goals, but they just don't allow you to create chances. I think for us to kind of take that kind of game on before we play High Point is important. That was kind of the thought process in scheduling the game. We wanted to play a very good Southern Conference team at home, but also a team that does not allow a lot of chance creation. That is very similar to High Point.
"It's going to be a real test for our guys to stay patient through the process of the match and kind of recognize that when the few and far opportunities to score do come up that you've kind of got to capitalize on them while at the same time being very mindful that Furman is a team that can score goals. They score timely goals. (Furman head coach) Doug Allison is a good friend and their staff does a great job. They've got great players and it's a great academic institution. All of these things when putting together a schedule are why it's special to have like-minded institutions playing soccer on what is shaping up to be a beautiful night in Asheville."
