ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It's a lot earlier than usual, but UNC Asheville men's soccer is looking forward to starting Big South Conference play by hosting USC Upstate on Friday, Aug. 31, at Greenwood Field.

"We are excited to get conference play going," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "This is a little bit new for us to start this early. It's been a little bit challenging for us this week because you have to change gears in the way you prepare."

The regular season opener for UNC Asheville men's soccer is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. The match will be streamed live on BSN on ESPN+.

The match will be the second match of a soccer doubleheader at Greenwood Field with the women's soccer team battling Delaware State at 4 p.m. The women's match will also be streamed live on BSN on ESPN+.

The doubleheader will be Freshman Night for both teams. UNC Asheville will recognize all freshmen from both squads as well as host promotional games for all UNC Asheville freshmen and students. All UNC Asheville students will receive free admission to the Friday Night Futbol doubleheader.

Also on Aug. 31, it will be Back to School Blues Night. All local elementary and middle school students, who also wear blue to the game, will receive free admission to both the UNC Asheville men's and women's contests.

Lastly, fans will receive a Bulldog Brigade cowbell upon admission, while supplies last.

History-Making Match

The matchup on Friday will mark Asheville's first time battling USC Upstate as conference foes in any sport. It will also be the first league game of the 2018 Big South Conference men's soccer schedule.

First of Careers
UNC Asheville redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Dakotah Bainter picked up his first career shutout in the win over Wofford, while Lane Carroll secured his first career goal and game-winning tally in the victory over the Terriers.

About USC Upstate
The Spartans travel to UNC Asheville with an 0-1 record after a narrow 3-1 loss at No. 23 NC State last Friday. USC Upstate returns 12 letterwinners from last year's squad. They welcomed 15 newcomers to a 2018 team that was picked ninth in the Big South preseason tally.

"Upstate is pretty good," Mennell said. "Scott Halkett does a great job with them. We played them this past spring and I liked where they were going and he's added a bunch of new players. They were very good against NC State and they were a little unfortunate for the scoreline to read like it did. We've got a real test on our hands. They're going to be a great addition to Big South men's soccer."

Series
UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell secured his first head coaching win over USC Upstate with a 2-0 victory over the Spartans in Spartanburg, S.C. on Aug. 28, 2015. The Bulldogs are 2-0-1 against USC Upstate in their last three matchups with wins in 2013 and 2015.

Quotable
"We've kind of challenged ourselves," Mennell said on the start of the regular season. "I thought we learned a lot at Wright State and I thought we managed the game at Wofford well and took some positive steps. We're just trying to continue that progress."
