Mac Gourlay Joins UNC Asheville Men’s Soccer Program

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell announced the addition of 6-foot-1 defender Mac Gourlay to the 2018 roster on Friday, Aug. 3, 2018.
Gourlay transfers to UNC Asheville from NC State. He is eligible to play immediately.
"We are very excited that Mac Gourlay has chosen UNC Asheville," Mennell said. "He is a player we are very familiar with as he played at HFC before moving to the US Soccer Development Academy at NCFC. Mac is a very versatile defender who is excellent in the air and has all the qualities you wish for in a center back. He is very good on the ball, defends well in 1 v 1 situations and is quite adept at marshaling a defense. Also, he is an Asheville native, so adding players developed locally is really important to what we are doing. He will make us better immediately."
Gourlay did not play in a match at NC State this past season after suffering an injury in the preseason. He will have all four years of eligibility remaining at UNC Asheville.
Prior to originally joining NC State, Gourlay was considered one of the top recruits in the entire country. In fact, he was listed among the Top Drawer Soccer IMG Top 150.
The Asheville native played his high school soccer for Carolina Day School. He earned all-conference honors and all-state honors during his time playing for the Wildcats. Gourlay was a Citizen-Times All-WNC selection for two seasons.
Gourlay played his club soccer for the Capital Area Railhawks Academy (U17/U18) for his final two years of high school. He was a part of the ODP Region 3 team trips to Italy (2015) and Argentina (2016).
Gourlay also played this past summer for the Asheville City SC.
Mac Gourlay is the second Gourlay to join the UNC Asheville men's soccer program with his brother, Cy, also suiting up for the Bulldogs.
Gourlay is now the 11th and final player from the state of North Carolina to join the Bulldogs in the 2018 signing class.
