IT’S FREE - UNC Asheville Men’s Soccer to Host Georgia Southern for Asheville Appetizer on Saturday

08.17.2018 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – It's the final dress rehearsal before the season officially starts, and UNC Asheville men's soccer is excited about having the opportunity to show off the 2018 Bulldogs in front of the home crowd at Greenwood Field.

"It's nice to be able to play at home for our guys after having played on the road for our first two exhibitions," UNC Asheville men's soccer head coach Mathes Mennell said. "We are playing against a good Georgia Southern team. Coach (John) Murphy came into the program around the same time I did here at Asheville and he's getting it going there. They had a great result against Presbyterian last week (5-1 win). They're obviously a good side. Presbyterian is the defending Big South champs."

The Bulldogs and Georgia Southern are slated to kick things off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Greenwood Field.

It's an appetizing final exhibition with two solid squads set to battle in the Bulldogs and the Eagles.

In fact, the exhibition match will serve as the Asheville Appetizer home-opening event for men's soccer. Fans are encouraged to come out and try some free samples from a handful of our local Asheville restaurants, such as Asheville Pizza & Brewing, Bad Happy, Twisted Laurel, Wild Wing Café, The Hop and much more.

Admission is completely FREE to the exhibition.

BULLDOG BITES

Bullish About the Bulldogs
UNC Asheville men's soccer received one first-place vote in the 2018 Big South men's soccer preseason poll.

About Georgia Southern
The Eagles were picked to finish third in the preseason Sun Belt men's soccer poll. Coastal Carolina is the preseason favorite in the league followed by 2018 UNC Asheville opponent Georgia State (9/4 in Atlanta). Appalachian State, who the Bulldogs host at Greenwood Field at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12, was picked fourth in the preseason poll. Georgia Southern finished the 2017 season with an overall record of 9-8-1.

Quotable
"We're looking for a little bit more game sharpness. Again, we don't expect to be a finished product, but based on training this week we will be a lot closer than we were at the start of camp, which is kind of the goal. We won't play 27 guys. You'll see more of what we think the first 11 and the match day roster will be as we open up against Wright State. I think overall as to what I am looking for in the exhibition, it's sharpness, continuing our competitive spirit and hopefully putting on a good show in front of our fans."
