2018 UNC Asheville Men's Soccer Schedule
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville men's soccer fourth-year head coach Mathes Mennell officially unveiled the 2018 UNC Asheville men's soccer schedule on Monday, July 2, 2018.
The 2018 UNC Asheville men's soccer schedule features eight home games for the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field.
Mennell was very strategic in how they went about putting together the 2018 schedule.
"The main thing was preparing our student-athletes for the rigors of Big South play and also at the same time giving them the opportunity to compete against schools that are excellent academic institutions, but also have strong men's soccer programs," Mennell said.
UNC Asheville men's soccer opens its 2018 slate with three exhibitions, which includes road dates at Northern Kentucky of the Horizon League (Saturday, Aug. 11 – 11 a.m.) and at two-time defending Southern Conference Tournament champion Mercer (Tuesday, Aug. 14 – 5 p.m.).
UNC Asheville will open up its home games at Greenwood Field at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, by playing host to Georgia Southern of the Sun Belt for an exhibition match at 6 p.m.
"If you look at our exhibitions, we are going to play a very good Northern Kentucky team that will also allow us to play a game in fairly warm conditions that we are hoping will mimic our opener at Wright State," Mennell relayed. "The same with Mercer. They are a very strong program that will challenge our guys in the heat. Georgia Southern is a very good team that gives us an opportunity to play at home on opening weekend here at UNC Asheville with classes starting the following Monday. It will be a great final dress rehearsal before we begin the regular season."
The Bulldogs officially open their 2018 regular season by traveling to Dayton, Ohio to battle Horizon League power Wright State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24.
A few days later, UNC Asheville will travel just up the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to tangle with Wofford of the Southern Conference at 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. The Bulldogs earned a 2-0 victory over Wofford last season at Greenwood Field on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017.
UNC Asheville will commence its home schedule by battling USC Upstate at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, at Greenwood Field. The matchup will mark Asheville's first time battling USC Upstate as conference foes in any sport. It will also be the first league game of the 2018 Big South Conference men's soccer schedule.
"We are starting our conference play much earlier than we are accustomed to with the addition of USC Upstate," Mennell mused. "Coach (Scott) Halkett has done a great job. We played them in the spring. They're going to be good. We're really excited to open up our inaugural conference fixture with them at home. It should be a great occasion."
The Bulldogs will be facing USC Upstate overall for the first time since the 2015 regular season opener, which Asheville won 2-0 in Spartanburg, S.C. on Aug. 28, 2015, to give Mennell his first win as head coach.
After opening conference play against the Spartans, UNC Asheville will then hit the road for three straight matches with the first being Asheville's yearly matchup against a strong Georgia State program. The Bulldogs will take on the Panthers of the Sun Belt at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Atlanta.
UNC Asheville will then travel to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the UNCW Springhill Suites Classic where they will take on two programs from the Colonial Athletic Association. The Bulldogs will first battle the College of Charleston at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7, before closing out their time at the event by challenging host UNCW at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9.
The Bulldogs return to Greenwood Field on Wednesday, Sept. 12, to play host to Appalachian State of the Sun Belt for the 37th meeting of the two rival programs at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 12.
UNC Asheville will then travel to Davidson, N.C. to face Davidson of the Atlantic 10 Conference at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16.
Asheville returns home next for two straight matches at Greenwood Field. The Bulldogs first return to league play at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, by hosting Longwood before welcoming Furman of the Southern Conference to Greenwood Field at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Bulldogs travel to High Point for a Big South matchup at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, before welcoming the Eagles of Winthrop for a home conference contest at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Bulldogs picked up a thrilling 1-0 league road win in Rock Hill, S.C. over Winthrop last season on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017.
UNC Asheville will then hit the road for two straight road conference matches on Wednesday, Oct. 10 (Presbyterian – 7 p.m.) and on Saturday, Oct. 13 (Radford – 4 p.m.).
The Bulldogs will hold their Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they play host to VMI of the Southern Conference. The match is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at Greenwood Field.
UNC Asheville's final road non-conference league match of the year will see the Bulldogs travel to Buies Creek, N.C. to take on Campbell at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27.
The Bulldogs close out the regular season at home on Halloween when they play host to league foe Gardner-Webb in the "Battle of the Bulldogs" at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Greenwood Field.
