Norman Reveals Six Men Track & Field Signees
06.26.2018 | Track and Field
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville track and field head coach Jesse Norman revealed the addition of six men track and field athletes that will join the 2018-19 roster.
"As a program, we are looking forward to working with this incoming men's class. This is a class that takes care of some events which we know are typically weak within the conference and take advantage of our coaching strengths," said Norman. "This class will be a big part of us moving up within the Big South Conference, especially with the recent movement. We feel this class, along with our numerous walk-ons, will help us bridge the gap from where we currently are to where we'd like to take the program in the coming years."
About The Bulldogs
Mitchell Allen – First Academy High School (Ocoee, FL)
PR's: 800m – 1:59.96, 1600m – 4:44.75
Coach's Comments – "Mitchell is someone who will help bolster our growing middle distance program. He was able to make some improvements this spring and as a coaching staff, we believe that he has a pretty big upside. We are excited to see his development."
Jeff Blake – Mooresville High School (Mooresville, NC)
PR's: 55m hurdles – 7.91, 60m hurdles – 8.49, 110m hurdles – 14.51, 300m hurdles – 39.78
Coach's Comments – "Jeff is a North Carolina product and is a hurdler that we targeted to bolster our men's hurdle program. His addition will give us quality hurdlers that could score points in a traditionally weak event within the Big South Conference."
Roberto Castro – Lake Nona HS (Orlando, FL)
PR's: 400m – 52.68, 800m – 1:57.73, 1600m – 4:22.20, 3200m – 9:53.54, 5k – 16:01.65
Coach's Comments – "Roberto is someone who we believe has a big upside. He has opened up with some solid performances this year. He seems to be a good all-around distance athlete, who has good speed and aerobic abilities. He should be able to come in and help strengthen our men's distance program next year. I'm excited to see what his development will look like under Adam Puett's guidance, as he reminds us of former Bulldog Dominic Collichio."
Jack Choinere – Myers Park High School (Charlotte, NC)
PR's: Shot Put – 54-0.5, Discus – 161-6
Coach's Comments – "Jack is a great last-minute pickup for our program. As we look to further develop our field program, he expressed interest in UNC Asheville, and we hope he will help us build back up the great tradition of UNC Asheville throws. When he gets into our program, with guidance from Joel Williams and Puett, we feel that he will become a top thrower in the Big South Conference."
Nick Roberts – Countryside High School (Clearwater, FL)
PR's: 110m hurdles – 14.80, 300m hurdles – 39.21
Coach's Comments – "Nick is a hurdler that we targeted early in the recruiting process. As a coaching staff, we made the decision to bolster the depth and quality of our men's hurdle program and feel that we did a good job with the addition of Nick. Along with Jeff Blake, his addition gives us two great hurdlers that will be able to push each other towards the top of the Big South Conference."
Torran Goings – Westwood HS (Columbia, SC)
PR's: 100m – 10.88, 200m – 22.55
Coach's Comments – "Torran is a huge addition to our men's sprint group. He was someone that all of our current student-athletes enjoyed having around. He will make an immediate impact with the losses we have due to graduation this year. He will become one of the cornerstones for what we want our sprint group to become over the next few years."
