ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville track and field head coach Jesse Norman announced on Tuesday the addition of eight women's track and field athletes that are set to join the 2018-19 roster.
"Our coaching staff is extremely pleased with the recruiting efforts on the women's side this year," Norman said. "We spent this past year with a major focus on increasing the number and quality of our recruiting class, and we feel like this class accomplishes that feat. This class represents a big step for us as a program, and we are excited to see how they develop over the coming years."
About The Bulldogs
Claudia Prieto Alcaide – AD Marathon Club (Madrid, Spain)
PRs: 60m – 7.70, 100m – 12.30, Long Jump – 18-9.25 (5.72m), Triple Jump – 39-7.25 (12.07m)
Coach's Comments – "Claudia is joining the program from Spain and will be a great addition to our growing jumping program here at UNC Asheville. She has made some great progressions in her triple jump this year, and I believe with continued training she will become a consistent All-Conference performer with the ability to win down the road. She also will bring short sprint ability to the program that will help us as we continue trying to build our sprint program."
Khadeesha Crumbley – Auburn High School (Auburn, AL)
PRs: 100m – 12.17, 200m – 25.08, 400m – 57.45
Coach's Comments – "Khadeesha is a sprinter that we targeted early in the process. She is someone that will help to increase the quality and depth of our women's long sprint program. Under Joel's tutelage, we feel that she will develop into a high-quality sprinter within the Big South Conference and will help to push current All-Conference performer Desire Brown."
Sydney DeBerry – Page High School (Greensboro, NC)
PRs: 100m – 12.64, 200m – 26.71, 300m – 43.91, Long Jump – 18-9.00, Triple Jump – 36-4.75
Coach's Comments – "Sydney is a North Carolina product whom I believe has tremendous upside in the jumping events. I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with her, as I believe she will be an incredible teammate and a valuable addition to the jumps program. She had a major breakthrough in the long jump this past spring and will focus on getting her triple jump performance to match."
Samantha Decker – West Carteret HS (Morehead City, NC)
PRs: 1600m – 5:35.20, 3200m – 12:16.74, 5k – 19:59.00
Coach's Comments – "Samantha is someone whom I believe will have a big upside once she gets to Asheville in the fall. She will add some depth to our distance program and will help us in our push towards the top of the conference. She suffered some setbacks this past spring, but I feel confident that she will continue to grow as an athlete into someone that will enhance our program."
Alyx Evans – Hartford High School (Hartford, WI)
PRs: 800m – 2:16.91, 5k – 20:07.09
Coach's Comments – "Alyx comes to UNC Asheville from the Midwest. With her speed in the 800m, I believe that she will flourish within our program and will develop into a solid contributor in the fall along with the 400m and 1500m events come the spring."
Kindra Mingo – Cy Fair High School (Cypress, TX)
PRs: 60m – 8.25, 100m – 12.56, 200m – 24.87, 300m – 44.30
Coach's Comments – "Kindra was another big sprinter that we targeted as a coaching staff this past year. Coming from Texas, she will be use to high level competition and is coming in as the fastest 200m sprint recruit in UNC Asheville history. We are excited to see how she develops under Joel's program, as she will be a big factor in our upcoming success during the track seasons."
Madeline Nichols – Upper Arlington High School (Columbus, OH)
PRs: 1600m – 5:24.38, 3200m – 11:36.93, 5k – 18:49.00
Coach's Comments – "Madeline is another Ohio product from the same high school as current Bulldog Megan Brewer. She will be a good long distance addition to the program that will bolster the women's distance program next year. She made some breakthroughs this past spring that I believe will help her as she progresses to collegiate distance running."
Clara Wincheski – Bruton HS (Williamsburg, VA)
PRs: 1600m – 5:17.00, 3200m – 11:00.33, 5k – 18:29.00
Coach's Comments – "Clara is a huge addition for our program and was one of the big targets for this year's distance class. She is someone that I believe fits the mold of our past student-athletes, Melanie Kulesz and Emma Bussard, who were All-Conference performers and won an individual championship. Wincheski should be able to come into the program, be an immediate impact and be counted on to help push our top ladies."
