Santos Announces Addition of Eight to Volleyball Roster

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball head coach Frederico Santos announced the addition of eight to the 2018 Bulldog roster recently.
The eight newcomers join a UNC Asheville volleyball program that had its most conference wins since 2010 this past season.

Meghan Bewick
Hometown: Greenville, N.C.
High School: D.H. Conley High School
Position: Defensive Specialist
Coach Santos on Meghan: "Meghan is a skilled player who will add to the defensive specialist position. She is competitive and has a drive to succeed."
Meghan joins the UNC Asheville volleyball program after spending her freshman season with the women's soccer program.
Before making her way to UNC Asheville, Bewick was a three-sport high school athlete, competing in basketball, volleyball and soccer. She won Defensive Player of the Year in volleyball her sophomore year.
Bewick was all-conference in both soccer and volleyball in her sophomore and junior seasons. She was a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society and English Honor Society in high school.
Julia Borges Teixeira da Silva
Hometown: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
High School: Sistema Elite de Ensino
Junior College: Broward College
Position: Right Side
Coach Santos on Julia: "We are thrilled to have Julia Borges on our roster. Julia brings a wealth of experience needed on the floor and is greatly skilled. Her volleyball IQ and leadership will be a tremendous addition to our team."
Borges originally started her career at North Idaho College before transferring to Broward College in 2016. She missed all of the 2016 season due to a medical redshirt.
This past season with the Seahawks, Borges was named All-Southern Conference in the NJCAA. In the NJCAA Region 8 statistics, Borges was 16th in digs per set (3.80), 17th in hitting percentage, 30th in kills per set (2.38) and 33rd in points per set (2.8).
Sammy Luscher
Hometown: Wilmington, N.C.
High School: Ashley High School
Position: Setter
Coach Santos on Sammy: "Sammy will add depth to the setter position, which will be highly competitive this fall. She is a smart player that has great skills and is a fiery competitor."
Luscher was the Ashley High School team Most Valuable Player for two years. A two-time all-conference selection, Luscher helped lead her team to the conference championship. A three-year letterwinner, Luscher, who won number Player of the Week awards, was a three-year captain for Ashley High School.
A two-time state champion with her club team, Luscher was the Yearbook Editor-in-Chief at Ashley High School. She won the Scholastic Gold Key award for both art and photography and was a National Honors Society member.
Peyton McClinton
Hometown: Louisville, Ky.
High School: Presentation Academy
Position: Outside Hitter
Coach Santos on Peyton: "Peyton will challenge for a starting position at outside hitter this fall. She is a smart hitter, has great skills and is a great competitor."
McClinton was selected as the outstanding varsity hitter on her high school team for the last three years. She helped lead her team to the KHSAA Class A state championship in 2015 and 2016.
A two-time KHSAA All-Tournament Team selection, McClinton was the Most Valuable Player in the tournament in 2016. An AAU Premier All-American in 2017, McClinton was a part of four District Championship teams at Presentation.
Sabrina Pinard
Hometown: Huntersville, N.C.
High School: Lake Norman Charter
Junior College: Catawba Valley
Position: Middle Blocker/Right Side
Coach Santos on Sabrina: "Sabrina will bring experience to the middle blocker and right side positions this fall. She is a very smart player with a great understanding of the game. She is a team player that is very competitive. She had a very good college career at Catawba Valley. We look forward to having her experience this fall."
At Lake Norman, Pinard was a Junior Marshall and an Honor Roll selection. The team captain, she garnered all-conference first-team honors.
Named to the All-Academic Region and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Academic first-team, Pinard won the team Most Valuable Player award and was a NJCAA all-region team choice. Pinard was named to the NJCAA Region X District P All-Tournament Team.
Anna Skryd
Hometown: St. Charles, Ill.
High School: St. Charles East
Position: Libero
Coach Santos on Anna: "Anna is a highly-trained player from the prestigious Sports Performance club in Chicago. She will challenge for a starting spot this fall. She is a driven player with a great attitude and a competitive drive."
The Most Valuable Player in St. Charles East's preseason tournament, Skryd was an all-conference and all-tournament selection during her time in the prep ranks.
Skryd was a two-time Academic All-Conference choice.
Hannah Spicer
Hometown: St. Charles, Ill.
High School: St. Charles East High School
Position: Outside Hitter
Coach Santos on Hannah: "Hannah will also come in and add depth to the outside hitter position as well as the right side position. She is a very well-trained player from the Sports Performance Club in Chicago and she will bring excitement and leadership on the court."
Spicer is a three-time Academic All-Conference selection and an Honorable Mention All-Area selection as a senior. She received the St. Charles East Volleyball Sportsmanship Award as a senior.
Grace Volk
Hometown: Arlington, Neb.
High School: Arlington High School
Position: Setter
Coach Santos on Grace: "Grace will add depth and competition to the setting position. She is a smart player that leads on the floor well."
A four-time all-conference selection, Volk was chosen first-team all-conference in both 2016 and 2017. A three-year team captain, Volk was also an all-state honorable mention selection from 2014-17.
