Gillespie Chosen to Google Cloud Academic All-District® Team

Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Blanton Gillespie of UNC Asheville track and field and cross country has been selected to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men's Track & Field/Cross Country District 3 Team.
As an Academic All-District selection on the team selected by CoSIDA, Gillespie is now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America honors. The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom.
Gillespie's honor marks the second straight year a member of UNC Asheville track and field and cross country has been selected to the Academic All-District Team. Caleb Smith garnered Academic All-District honors last year for UNC Asheville.
"I'm very excited about Blanton winning this honor," UNC Asheville track and field and cross country head coach Jesse Norman said. "He is very deserving and I know he has worked hard for this throughout his time here at UNC Asheville. When I think of the meaning of a student-athlete, Blanton is what I think of. He's accomplished great things in the classroom and has continually progressed his athletic career. Neither has compromised the other. In fact, I believe they have helped to strengthen each other. Not only is this a great individual accomplishment for Blanton, but this is a great honor for the track team as it gives another example of the kind of student-athletes we bring into and develop in this program."
A junior from Shelby, N.C., Gillespie was named the 2018 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The Chemistry major with a minor in Neuroscience after the conclusion of his junior year now owns a 3.996 grade-point average.
A distance runner, Gillespie was selected to the 2018 Big South Men's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team following the conclusion of the Indoor Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018.
