ASHEVILLE, N.C. –The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the Google Cloud Academic All-District® At-Large Team on Thursday, and sophomore Catherine Allen was named to the District 3 Team.
The Google Cloud Academic All-District® accolade marks the first time a UNC Asheville swimmer has been honored by CoSIDA.
The 2017-18 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Women's At-Large Team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the pool and in the classroom.
First-team Google Cloud Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot, with Google Cloud Academic All-America® teams announced in June.
Allen is one of two swimmers that compete in the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) to be honored and is also one of three swimmers that were selected out of District 3. She is also one of only 17 total NCAA Division I swimmers that were selected to the At-Large Teams.
Allen, who has an unblemished 4.0 grade-point average as a Biology major, is a Pisgah Merit Award winner and is a member of the UNC Asheville Honors Program. As a sophomore, she is doing undergraduate research that tests the co-cultures of bacteria to determine if it shows antibiotic activity against Staph and E. Coli.
"We are so proud of Catherine's accomplishments both in the classroom and pool," said UNC Asheville swimming head coach Elizabeth Lykins. "Receiving the Google Cloud Academic All-District® honor is well-deserved, as she is heavily involved with the Honors Program and undergraduate biology research. Catherine's commitment to her studies reaches beyond the typical student-athlete."
In April of this season, Allen earned UNC Asheville's first-ever CCSA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. She earned the award based on her performance in the pool and in the classroom.
Outside of the classroom, Allen is an exceptional swimmer for the Bulldogs. This season at the CCSA Championships in Athens, Ga., the Raleigh, N.C. native broke two individual school records (100 and 200 butterfly) and two relay program records (800 freestyle and 400 medley relays).
On top of Allen's individual accolade, the swim team was awarded its 11th straight College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team honor in February of this year.
